Lately, I’ve been looking more and more into castle and abbey ruins, secret gardens and parks…

The kind of place I’d recommend if you’re the type of person who’d like to explore London as an overthinker.

But outside London. Because we’ve seen the real London together.

We’ve visited London, from its secret, old ruins to its stately homes and even its forgotten neighborhoods.

We’ve shopped at all kinds of British shops, we’ve seen some amazing artsy attractions, dining courts, study cafes, and even free places to work.

And I want to take you out of London today.

To places that speak loudly even without uttering a word.

10+ Hidden Peaceful Places Near London

London is full of noise; good noise, sometimes.

Energy, movement, people living their lives.

But every so often (more often than not, rather), I need to step outside of it.

Not to escape the city itself, but to remember something softer underneath it. A slower rhythm. A quieter way of being.

I started saving places, locations that don’t scream for attention. Not the usual lists or “must-sees.” Just spaces that looked like they held stillness.

Some are right on the edge of London, others a short train ride out – love hopping on a train, and some of you guys might love a good train ride, too.

What these secret spots and other cheap day trips have in common is this: peace that doesn’t perform. Just peace, waiting quietly for us.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Lesnes Abbey

Tucked away in Abbey Wood in London, Lesnes Abbey sits surrounded by ancient trees and silence.

These are the kinds of ruins that don’t just crumble—they absorb you. Built in the 1100s, the abbey has long been abandoned, but its soul feels intact.

There’s something about being among broken arches and open sky that reminds me what’s worth carrying.

The abbey is part of a wider woodland and park, with quiet trails that wind between wildflowers and old roots.

I imagine going there not to do anything, but just to be—maybe to bring a book, or not even that. Maybe to walk until my breath deepens, then sit without reason.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Barking Abbey

In East London, near a busy high street and traffic, Barking Abbey still holds its place.

We’re not in the depths of lively East London; far from Bethnal Green, Liverpool Street, Brick Lane and Shoreditch.

There’s not much left of the abbey—stone walls, the base of columns, a worn path—but its presence is strong.

It was once one of the most important religious sites for women in England. That matters.

There’s something sacred about spaces that are quiet now, but weren’t always; I think about the prayers said here, the solitude chosen rather than forced, and it reminds me a little… of myself.

It’s the kind of place you walk through slowly, not because it’s large, but because you want it to last a little longer and reflect just a little bit more.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Waverley Abbey

A little beyond the London boundary, near Farnham, Waverley Abbey sits by the water, half-forgotten, and is another hidden place where your thoughts can roam freely.

The first Cistercian monastery in England—now a haven for wanderers who need a moment that doesn’t ask for anything.

The arches still stand tall, reflected in the River Wey.

There, it really just looks like the past hasn’t quite let go.

It’s one of those hidden peaceful places near London that holds both beauty and stillness without trying too hard; that’s rare, and makes for an amazing day with the kids outside the city walls.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Reading Abbey

Reading is known for a lot of things, but peace isn’t usually one of them.

Still, right in the middle of the town sits Reading Abbey—founded in 1121, once enormous, now beautifully broken.

The ruins sprawl across open grass, touched by moss and time: it’s the kind of place where you stop walking and just look, like you would at St Dunstan in the East back in the city.

A good reminder that greatness isn’t always loud.

That even kings are eventually humbled by earth and stone. And that silence can be more moving than ceremony.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Old Gorhambury House

North of London near St Albans, Old Gorhambury House stands mostly forgotten, and its ruins still call the name of people in search of peace and quiet.

What’s left of the mansion is a shell—a façade of columns, an outline of grandeur. And yet, it feels more grounded than most stately homes ever do.

Often beauty comes from what’s no longer maintained – I guess that’s why I fell in love with beautiful Rome, where ruins and modernity blend in seamlessly.

When nature starts to blur the edges.

I’m drawn to these kinds of ruins because they don’t demand admiration—they allow reflection.

They give space. And when I see the sky through broken windows, I feel right where I need to be, and feel I can be myself without pretending or owing anyone anything.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Bayham Old Abbey

On the Kent/Sussex border lies one of the most cinematic places we’re given to see in the UK – Bayham Old Abbey.

Sprawling ruins, wide lawns, wildflowers. And barely a soul in sight.

It’s peaceful in a way few places are: not just quiet, but generous.

There’s enough room here to stretch every part of yourself that’s felt constricted, and all of this with gorgeous views of the past.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Chislehurst Caves

Not all peace comes from sunlight.

Some of it is deep, echoing, dark. Chislehurst Caves are a network of man-made tunnels used for mining, shelter, and even music once, which you can visit pretty much any time during the year.

The idea of walking through silence carved out by human hands feels powerful.

The caves are only accessible by guided tour, but the stillness they offer is a different kind. Less about views—more about listening.

To quiet.

To your own breath.

To the echo of time.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Crystal Grotto at Painshill Park

Sometimes stillness is sparkly, isn’t it?

I’m the kind of person who’ll look for natural spots in London wherever I can, and best believe I will find the sparkle.

The Crystal Grotto at Painshill Park is a handcrafted wonder: glittering stones, soft water, shadows and light.

Even though it’s a constructed space, it holds peace the way old sanctuaries do.

Painshill itself is a garden of follies and lakes, but the grotto is the heart—where everything slows down.

It’s the kind of place to visit when you feel dull inside; let the light bounce off crystal and remind you what wonderful really means.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Eltham Palace

Eltham Palace feels like a place that shouldn’t exist so close to London, and one I’ve mentioned a couple of times here before.

It’s a blend of medieval and Art Deco architecture, wrapped in quiet gardens and wide lawns.

The kind of place you could wander through alone on a cloudy day and feel like you’ve stepped out of time.

The palace itself not free to visit, but it might be worth saving for when your soul needs elegance; not for the sake of glamour, but for stillness dressed in gold and stone.

Even without the ticket, the surrounding gardens offer peace.

You don’t need to see the interiors to feel the shift; amazing to visit during spring, summer, and perfect if you’re visiting London in the fall, too.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Berkhamsted Castle

Some ruins feel forgotten. Others feel like they’re remembering you: Berkhamsted Castle is one of those places.

Just a short walk from the station, you step into a quiet patch of grass and stone that once mattered more than most people know, where William the Conqueror was offered the crown.

Now it’s just earthworks, a few stone walls, and peace.

I think what draws me in is the gentleness of it all; there’s no drama here.

Just space to walk slowly, sit in the sun, maybe imagine what used to echo through the grounds.

It’s fenced, yes—but it doesn’t feel closed: it’s open in the way old places are when they’re not trying to prove anything.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Walthamstow Wetlands

You don’t always have to leave London to find quiet.

Walthamstow Wetlands is a nature reserve full of birds, reeds, and is huge: over 200 hectares, and right near Tottenham Hale, where I used to live for a bit before moving to Rome.

The paths are wide, the views are open, and there’s no pressure to do anything but walk and breathe.

There’s something healing about water that’s not meant to entertain. It just exists. And you get to exist beside it.

Hidden Peaceful Places Near London: Fulham Palace Garden

Fulham Palace and its secret gardens… Well, not so secret, but still overlooked.

Fulham Palace Garden is one of those places that feels suspended between centuries.

The walled garden, the old orchard, the air heavy with green—it’s one of those gentle places that feels close to home, even if it’s your first time.

If you ever needed proof that peace still grows in cities, Fulham Palace is it: the colors, the quiet, the old trees…

You could bring a notebook or a tired heart, and either would be safe here. Before you go, you could pop by the River Cafe right outside Putney Bridge station, and grab a latte and a slice of carrot cake.

Then, all you have to do is walk around, and enjoy all the peace you can get.

10+ Hidden Peaceful Places Near London

As an ex-makeup artist who used to run from fashion photoshoot to beauty backdrops, I used to think stillness was something I’d create with color.

And it was.

Some days, it helped more than others.

These days, I’m more interested in historical sites where the world is already quiet and no one needs anything from me, not a word, not a photo.

There are many, many hidden gems in London – as in, right inside the city.

Fleet Street, Spitalfields, Rotherhithe, Marylebone, Fitzrovia, Barbican and other secret church gardens…

These, today, are the kinds of hidden peaceful places you might want to visit if you’re popping by London in May or June, in the summer or at the beginning of fall.

Because if spending the summer in London is already amazing, I have to admit that the fall has to be my favorite season to walk around the city.

Especially in forgotten places like Camden Passage, or other secret gardens in Central that no one really seems to care about.

Not everything beautiful is loud, and I hope you’ve found here some really peaceful spots to write, read, reflect, have a picnic, or feel whatever you don’t feel free to feel in the city.
