Secret Gardens in London: Kyoto Garden, Holland Park

Kyoto Garden in Holland Park is another one of the best Japanese gardens in London.
Not so secret anymore, if I may, and quite crowded when people start looking for places to see cherry blossom in London.
However, this is a really meditative space for me, with stone sculptures, fish in the pond and one of the only waterfalls in London.
Good to visit if you tend to wake up early, as Kyoto Garden opens at 7.30 in the morning – and is usually less crowded then.

It’s pretty far from Central London, in South East London, but it’s definitely worth a visit.
Whether you’re looking for places to picnic in London or just want to do things in London with your kids, that’s a fun place to hang out.

Secret Gardens in London: Hill Garden and Pergola, Hampstead Heath

In Hampstead Heath, you have one of the best spots for photoshoots in London, the Hill Garden and Pergola.
I’ve seen quite a few photoshoots taking place there, and it’s definitely one of the best places to see flowers in London.
Like Kyoto Garden and the Japanese Garden at Kew Gardens, in a way.

I love anything Italian – from Italian cafes to Italian makeup brands.
Having lived in Rome for three years, how could it be otherwise?
Sometimes, when I miss having breakfast in Rome and the stunning architecture you can find in that city, I pay a visit to the Italian Gardens.
They’re located at the entrance of Kensington Gardens (Bayswater Road side).
With sculptures and a stunning pond, they’re one of the best places to write in London in my opinion.

Secret Gardens in London: Mount Street Gardens, Mayfair

There are a couple of secret gardens in London around Mayfair, and the first ones are Mount Street Gardens.
That’s one of the best places to see the cherry blossom in London, and it’s relatively quiet.
Whether you’re looking for parks to picnic in London or picturesque places for photos, that’s the one.
You have a church in Mount Streets Gardens – also really beautiful.

Secret Gardens in London: St Dunstan in the East

I have talked about St Dunstan in the East on The Working Line before, as it’s probably one of my favorite secret gardens in London.
Locals tend to know about this one more and more, but there aren’t many church ruins in London and this one is unbelievable.
Really beautiful, it allows for plenty of pictures and the garden is really well-maintained.
Come during spring, fall or winter – that’s when St Dunstan in the East is most beautiful.

Secret Gardens in London: Greyfriars Christ Church

Greyfriars Christ Church is located in Central London, not too far from St Paul’s Cathedral.
Its vibe reminds me a little bit of that we can find when visiting St Dunstan in the East.
It’s however, this time, one of the most secret gardens in London – I’ve only ever seen a couple of people hanging out on the benches there.
Address: King Edward St, London EC1A 7BA

Secret Gardens in London: Duck Island Cottage at St James’ Park

St James’ Park is one of the most famous parks in London, but Duck Island Cottage is one of the cutest hidden gems you’ll find in Central London.
You do have a duck island with real ducks, and this beautiful cottage which looks stunning during spring.
The public cannot access the cottage, but it’s still one of the most aesthetic places in London for pictures and a date!

Like Inner Temple Gardens, the Reflection Garden is not far from St Paul’s – you actually have a straight view on the monument from the garden.

Secret Gardens in London: St Alphage Garden

St Alphage Garden is a cute, very small secret garden in Barbican, not too far from the London Museum.
And it’s probably one of the most interesting green spaces in London, since it also offers a piece of the London Wall.
Well, what remains of it.
You have a few benches there, and there isn’t much to do in Barbican aside from visiting the Barbican Conservatory, but it’s a very chill and romantic place.
Address: Barbican, London, UK

Secret Gardens in London: St Botolph Without Bishopsgate Garden

Who knew one of the most secret gardens in London would be located near Liverpool Street?
Called St Botolph Without Bishopsgate Gardens, the gardens are attached to the church.
Very peaceful, with only a bunch of locals reading or eating a meal deal at lunch during weekdays.
Closeby, you have lots of halal cafes, and you can also check out all the best street art in Brick Lane.
Don’t miss out on a secret sight, that of a colorful Victorian Bathhouse hidden at the back of the garden – come from Bishopsgate, and you’ll see it on your left after the fountain.
Address: Bishopsgate, London EC2M 3TL
Secret Gardens in London: Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park

I used to live in Mile End in East London, about 10 minutes from the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.
There are some incredibly beautiful cemeteries in London, and the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is part of the ‘Magnificent Seven.
I used to pay it a visit pretty often – lots of people don’t even know it exists.

Secret Gardens in London: St Paul’s Church Garden, Covent Garden

The first one of these is St Paul’s Church Garden, nestled in the heart of Covent Garden, and literally two minutes away from Covent Garden Piazza, home to Ladurée and various beauty shops.
St Paul’s Church is often referred to as the Actors’ Church, and dates back several centuries – inside of this beautiful church with notes of gold and purple, you’ll even find a model of a theatre made in the 1920s.
The garden has several entrances and really makes for an incredible hidden gem, especially during spring, when colorful flowers are blooming around the rows of benches.
What to do next? Visit:
- Covent Garden’s hidden gems
- Covent Garden’s best shops
- Bageriet Bakery, a Scandinavian bakery with incredible cinnamon buns
Secret Gardens in London: Charterhouse Square, Barbican

In Barbican, and very close to the Smithfield neighborhood, you’ll find the Charterhouse Square, which is but one of my favorite – and most secret gardens in Central London.
Easily accessible from the Barbican Tube station, the Charterhouse Square dates back to the 14th century, like the nearby Charterhouse, a former almshouse and Tudor mansion turned into a free museum.
The square itself was laid out in the 17th century, and with its few benches, makes for the perfect spot to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the City.
What next?
- Visit free historical sites nearby, including the Charterhouse and St Bartholomew the Great church
- Walk to the City of London and discover other secret gardens like St Alphage Church Garden
Secret Gardens in London: Southwark Cathedral Churchyard, London Bridge

One of the most secret church gardens in London, the Southwark Cathedral churchyard tickles London Bridge station, Borough Market and Southbank.
It makes for one of my favorite literary locations in London, especially with its statue of Shakespeare – a similar statue of the play writer can be found at New Inn Yard, in Shoreditch, along with a Romeo & Juliet mural.
The majestic Southwark Cathedral is a must-visit, completely free, and one of the last medieval sites to be still enjoyed in London.
If you only have one hour in London Bridge, the quaint garden is a place I can’t recommend enough!
Secret Gardens in London: Gardens of St Pancras New Church, Euston Road

Located off Euston Road, the St Pancras Church Gardens are one of the smallest gardens in this guide, which provide a tranquil moment off the very bustling high road.
The St Pancras New Church is, by the way, another hidden gem to check out, especially to see the Greek Revival columns and eight caryatids, huge, detailed female sculptures which adorn two sides of the church.
The curated gardens are a place I love visiting when I know I want to read in peace for a bit, and if you’re planning a romantic date, that would be a great place for a picnic as well.
Discover my photos of St Pancras Church Gardens and read my thoughts about my visit there, as well as what to do when you’re done visiting.
Secret Gardens in London: Pancras Square, King’s Cross

Now, if you keep walking down Euston Road (be very careful with your belongings there!), you will at some point reach King’s Cross station, and close by, you will also find the renovated Pancras Square.
We’re close to Coal Drops Yard here, a shopping spot I love especially when I want to get a new ring from Maya Magal – one of my favorite jewelry shops in London!
Pancras Square has huge buildings towering over it, and is one of the secret gardens in Central London, like Bishop’s Square in Liverpool Street, where you can also find fountains, soothing if anything.
What to do after?
- Have brunch in King’s Cross – there are many amazing restaurants and cafes to try out!
- Spend some time by Regent’s Canal and enjoy the calming presence of the colorful boats
- Visit the British Library, one of the prettiest free libraries in London
Secret Gardens in London: Salters’ Garden, City of London

Close to the Barbican Centre, the Salter’s Garden and its tranquil alleys makes for another hidden gem you can easily reach by walking from the historic neighborhood of Aldgate.
Plus, funny thing, you’ll find another secret garden adjacent to the Salters’ Garden, with the St Alphage church ruins, and between both of these, a piece of the London Wall, which dates back to Roman times.
The London Wall Walk is one I would recommend you take, especially since it takes you to several picturesque places in the City of London, from Aldgate to Noble Street, the Salters’ Garden, and even St Giles Cripplegate, one of the oldest churches in London.
Unique, very quiet, the Salters’ Garden is one of my utterly favorite places to read when I’m in town – blooming flowers during spring make it an even prettier spot!
Discover my photos of the Salter’s Garden and read my thoughts about my visit there, as well as what to do when you’re done visiting.
Secret Gardens in London: London Wall Behind St Giles Cripplegate, City of London

Right behind St Giles Cripplegate, close to the Barbican Centre, you will find pieces of the London Wall, built by the Romans in the 2nd and 3rd centuries.
With only a couple of benches along the water, this is a relaxing spot I always make a point to enjoy after visiting the Barbican Centre, especially if I’ve spent a lot of time writing there.
Indeed, the Barbican Centre is one of the completely free study spots in London, with power outlets, free WiFi, free exhibitions and even coffee shops inside – a must-visit if you’re a student in London.
Anyhoo.
After a visit to St Giles Cripplegate (which was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London in 1666), have a picnic along the water, and if you’d like a change of scenery, the Barbican Water Garden is another spot perfect to enjoy some nature in London.

Secret Gardens in London: Horniman Museum and Gardens, South East London

Located in South East London, the Horniman Museum Gardens are some of the lesser-known out of this entire guide.
I’ll talk about a lot of secret parks and green spaces in London here, but for a romantic date, this is probably one of the most beautiful.

Secret Gardens in London: Mark Street Gardens, Shoreditch

I’ve always loved walking around Shoreditch and discovering its hidden spots, aside from the local landmarks like Boxpark and Aida Shoreditch (although the pink latte is very much worth enjoying!).
Recently I took some time for myself and enjoyed the floral background of the former church on Mark Street – sitting in front of dangling leaves and wonderful architecture makes for a great moment to reflect upon life.

Secret Gardens in London: Garden at the Museum of the Home, Hoxton

In terms of free museums, few beat how I feel about Hoxton’s Museum of the Home, not too far from Mark Street Gardens, actually.
Period rooms explain how life used to be in British homes from the 16th century, with striking settings; tables, cards, portraits on the walls…
At the back of the Museum of the Home, you’ll find a few small gardens that, in turn, illustrate how British households evolved, from using gardens for medicinal herbs to tiny English gardens further at the back.
Discover my photos of the Museum of the Home and its garden, and read my thoughts about my visit there as well as what to do when you’re done visiting.
Secret Gardens in London: Ackroyd Drive Greenlink, East London

It’s by pure chance I stumbled upon the Ackroyd Drive Greenlink in East London, a few months ago – I was on my way to the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.
It’s a small reserve nature, open to the public, where, painted on an old railway, are pictures and portraits of endangered species.

Finding spots with water, fountains, lakes or waterfalls has not been the easiest; I’m always on the lookout for unique fountains, too, and was utterly pleased to come across Exchange Square near Broadgate Circle, in Liverpool Street.
I was actually looking for the Broadgate Venus, a huge, pretty quirky sculpture that adorns one end of Exchange Square, and loved to walk its little paths and eat a snack by its fountain.
Discover my photos of Exchange Square and read my thoughts about my visit there, as well as what to do when you’re done visiting.
Secret Gardens in London: Bishop Square, Liverpool Street

Also located in Liverpool Street, although closer to the Old Spitalfields Market, is located Bishops Square, which also houses the Charnel House: beautiful ruins of an old chapel.
This spot is full of commercial and office buildings, and being able to sit by the fish-inhabited ponds feels like a breath of fresh air.
Close by, don’t hesitate to check out Eataly by Liverpool Street Station; it’s a huge Italian grocery shop, which also doubles as a takeout and eat-in restaurant.
