If you’re wandering through Shoreditch and looking for a calm spot to catch your breath, Mark Street Gardens is a delightful little haven you might just fall in love with.

I know I have.

Only about a 7-minute walk from Shoreditch High Street Overground Station and Boxpark , this green space feels like a secret tucked away in one of London’s most bustling neighborhoods.

The contrast between the serene garden and Shoreditch’s high-energy streets makes it all the more special, and I can’t recommend a visit to this secret garden enough.

One thing I love about Mark Street Gardens is its connection to the area’s past.

If you’ve been here before, you know I love London’s historic areas, and the many ruins that dot the city.

This site was once home to the Langbourne Buildings, tenements built in the late 19th century thanks to Sidney Waterlow.

He’s a name worth knowing—a philanthropist and former Lord Mayor of London who dedicated his efforts to improving housing for working-class families.

Although the Langbourne Buildings were demolished in the 1970s, Waterlow’s legacy lives on here through a memorial stone in the garden.

The garden itself follows the path of the original Mark Street, a road that no longer exists but has been reimagined as a network of curved walkways surrounded by lawns and flower beds.

Knowing this history adds a layer of meaning to every visit, and it’s something I always think about as I wander through.

There’s a charming pergola, too, although much prettier with blooming flowers than in autumn, when I visited, perfect for grabbing a shaded seat with a book or just sitting quietly to enjoy a moment of stillness.

St Michael and All Angels Church, Shoreditch, London

What’s a little unfortunate about visiting Mark Street Gardens is that the on-site church, that of St Michael and All Angels, is closed, and cannot be visited.

However, the little corners, benches, and doors still make for a peaceful place, and a great photo spot if you’re into architecture.
