A local’s guide to visiting the Hampstead Pergola and Hill Gardens in North London; one of the best places to visit in the spring and a great photo spot!

Ever since the first day I discovered the Hampstead Pergola, I’ve absolutely loved it.

Not only is it considered one of the most instagrammable spots in London, but I personally think of it as one of the quietest places around – it’s just perfect for reading or getting some writing done.

I remember one summer in particular where my weeks were split between writing for the blog and hunting down new secret gardens across London.

That was how I eventually left my room in North Finchley one beautiful day to finally go see the Hampstead Pergola and Hill Gardens, which is easily one of the most stunning spots in North London.

The Pergola itself is essentially an elevated walkway decorated with climbing plants and flowers, all looking out over a perfectly manicured garden.

Hampstead is such a beautiful neighborhood, and while North London might be less famous than hotspots like Oxford Street, Soho, Camden Town, or Covent Garden, it is incredibly refreshing to visit.

Admittedly, if you’re visiting London for the first time, it might be a bit tricky to fit the Hampstead Pergola into your schedule since it takes a little while to get there from the center of town.

However, if you’re looking to put together an itinerary of North London’s hidden gems, it’s a great idea to pair the Pergola with a few other spots.

Some I really love, like the Highgate Cemetery, Holly Village, or even a walk through village neighborhoods like Muswell Hill or Highgate.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic and free date spot or just somewhere new to breathe in a bit of nature, the Hampstead Pergola and Hill Gardens is such a great place to go.

And of course, if you’re into instagrammable spots, the Pergola is a very cool place for photos.

It’s also worth noting that the Hill Gardens are a lovely place to visit in the spring or for seeing the autumn colors, though it can get very hot in the summer with few places to really hide from the sun.

Once you’ve finished enjoying your time there, you could head toward the Hampstead station on the Northern Line.

The area around the station is a gorgeous village neighborhood that feels miles away from the bustling vibe of the City of London or London Bridge, and it’s full of little independent boutiques.

Since Hampstead is a pretty posh neighborhood, you can often find amazing, inexpensive designer clothes in the local charity shops!

If you’re in the mood for more shopping after your visit, you can always head toward the stores in Camden Town, Soho, Covent Garden, or Oxford Street.

But if you’d rather stay in nature, I’d suggest checking out one of London’s secret beaches or a hidden garden like Elm Court, St Dunstan in the East, or Christchurch Greyfriars.

Those last two feature some of the most beautiful ruins in London wrapped in City of London gardens, and they are every bit as charming as the Hampstead Pergola!
