Best Hidden Gems in London: Tivoli Corner at Bank

If you, like me, hate Bank mainly because of the atrocious change between the Bank and Monument stations, you’re going to change your mind with this one.

Another one of the best hidden gems in London is the Tivoli Corner, which boasts the particular architecture you can find in Rome.

Indeed, Tivoli is a small town located close to the capital – and if you’re ever looking for the best day trips from Rome, that’s a precious one.

The Tivoli Corner was dedicated to the People of London, and seeing that type of Roman architecture in London is always something I appreciate.

The fact that I’ve lived in Rome and used to see that type of column every day really helps.

For those who have never visited Rome and Italy in general, that’s a little piece of Italy in the heart of London.

Around Princes Street, at Bank, again, you’ll find four Roman-inspired sculptures moulded on the outside of the Natwest Bank.

They were made by Charles Doman and are allegories for Security, Prosperity, Courage and Integrity.

The one above seems very peculiar.

Indeed, that statue of Prosperity reminds me greatly of the Statue of Abundance you can find on the Trevi Fountain in Rome.

There is not much about those sculptures on the Internet, but just so you know, the one in the picture above is Prosperity, and the one below is Security.

St Dunstan in the East is almost not one of the best hidden gems in London anymore; there are many people who pay it a visit.

What used to be a really cool London instagrammable spot is usually taken over by lots of couples.

Yes indeed, if you’re looking for secret places for couples in London, it’s still a very romantic spot to have a picnic and enjoy a sunny day.

Can get a bit crowded, though, especially in the spring and summer.

In any case, it’s still one of the best unusual things to do in London, that of visiting St Dunstan in the East.

It shows pretty well the architecture of a Gothic church, and there are not many hidden gems in London that make you feel that serene.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more off-the-beaten-path, I also have another amazing church in ruins for you below.

Anddd that’s the one!

There are plenty of really cool church ruins in London, but Christ Church Greyfriars is on another level.

So very well preserved, and a romantic spot that only Londoners seem to know – and even then.

The Greyfriars Christ Church was destroyed in the Blitz, during WWII, and the government decided not to rebuild it.

Now, like Dunstan in the East, it offers some of the most beautiful church ruins in London, with an adjacent small park, not too far from St Paul’s.

One of the oldest churches in London is Temple Church, and it’s also one of the best unusual places to visit in London.

Consecrated in the 12th Century, Temple Church has remained utterly well-preserved.

You can access Temple Church from Fleet Street.

When you arrive from St Paul’s Cathedral to Fleet Street and see Chancery Lane on the right, the entrance of Temple Church is on the other side of the road.

I have always loved columns and layered architecture for some reason, and some of the most beautiful architecture in London is present here.

But another one of my favorite hidden gems in London is not only Temple Church.

It’s also the Inner Temple Gardens, where I have spent a good couple of afternoons chilling and reading a good book.

To reach the Inner Temple Gardens, go to the right when you reach the columns pictured in the photo below.

Go down the stairs, and you’re there.

And then, another really cute hidden gem is this globe/compass sculpture in the middle of Inner Temple Gardens, which says:

Make Time, Save Time,
While Time Lasts.
All Time is No Time
When Time is Past.

I have to admit that this is one of my favorite secret places in London, and that this quote touched me so much I even got it tattooed a few months ago.

Given the quality of the people chilling there, more locals than tourists, Temple Church and Inner Garden are still very much secret…

And very romantic spots to have a date in London.

In Fleet Street, at numbers 143-144, you’ll find a statue of Queen Mary of Scots.

You can find more information about the story of this Queen Mary statue in Fleet Street and about the building in general, as it does have an interesting story.

I love finding hidden statues in London, and since this building is incredibly beautiful, this is definitely a place to see.

Not too far from the Queen Mary of Scots statue, which measures over two meters, you will find Inner Temple and Temple Church, as well as Somerset House a bit further.

And if you ever need to find cafes to work in St Paul’s and the Strand, I’ve written about a couple you’ll find close to the Queen Mary of Scots statue on Fleet Street!

On Milford Lane, almost at the crossroads with Aldwych and close to the Strand, you will find this statue of a female bust.

It is over a century old, and was created by Henry Poole, who didn’t actually sculpt the one statue.

Actually, when you go down Milford Lane, you will find two other female busts by Henry Poole, a bit more hidden from the busy road.

They are the only remaining statues of many more that used to decorate the United Kingdom Provident Institution.

And well, when you’re having a walk around the Strand and St Paul’s, they are a great little hidden gem!

I am yet to write my Coffee Academy & Brand Academy review, but for the moment being, I really wanted to mention this place.

This is one of my absolute favorite cafes in London Bridge, if only to order a delicious drink and a doughnut.

I know where to find the best hot chocolate in London, but I prefer coffee – by far.

And if you’re not close to Dark Sugars Brick Lane, which also prepare some delicious hot choc, then my ultimate favorite place is Coffee Academy.

They also sell Crosstown Doughnuts, which are some of my favorites ever.

I’ve written about the best vegan doughnuts in London, and Crosstown do have a good few options all more delicious than the last one.

As for Brand Academy, I do think it’s another one of the best hidden gems in London.

When we talk about places to go shopping in London, we often mention Westfield and Oxford Street.

Maybe a couple of the best TK Maxx in London, too.

But for really cute candles, perfumes, soft toys, and some of the coolest stationery in London, Brand Academy is a blast.

I will write about the best street art in London soon, but in the meantime, Brick Lane is full of beautiful and controversial street art.

Walking around Brick Lane and various markets in Shoreditch, you’ll find lots of street art in the adjacent streets.

And that’s the beauty of it, and probably one of the best hidden gems in London for whoever likes secret street art.

I’ve always really liked the Angel and Islington areas. There’s everything there, easy.

They’re located in North London, but still close to the King’s Cross and St Pancras area – perfect if you’re ever craving some brunch in King’s Cross.

From a beautiful shopping center that provides some of the best Christmas lights in London to really cute restaurants, Angel and Islington have it all.

Camden Passage (pictured above) is one of the prettiest streets in London, and rather unknown to tourists who rarely venture outside of Central London.

In Camden Passage, you have some really cute coffee shops (and Redemption Roasters is also located really close if you need to find a study cafe).

Some amazing restaurants, local produce merchants, and some artisan shops…

But you also have some really cool street art near Camden Passage, with a couple of really cool stencil street art pieces.

Over all, in my opinion one of the best secret places in London for whoever is really new to the city and has never been to North London.

Also, a bus ride away, you have Highgate Cemetery, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in London – and one of my favorite places in town.

Leadenhall Market is one of the most famous Harry Potter locations in London, and one of my favorite spots in town.

Not really much of a hidden gem for locals, Leadenhall Market is a sight.

Inside, you have a number of shops and restaurants, and you can access Leadenhall Market via Gracechurch Street or the tiny passageways all around it.

I always feel like I get lost every time I pay it a visit, but if there’s one thing I never miss, it’s Aux Merveilleux de Fred.

This is clearly one of the best bakeries in London, and the location is faultless.

If you’re ever looking for French pastries in London, that’s a spot you really cannot miss, like Belle Epoque in Islington.

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll even find street art in Leadenhall Market.

I spotted these tentacles a few months ago in one of the streets behind Leadenhall Market, and absolutely fell in love.

So, if you’re a Londoner and don’t feel like Leadenhall Market is one of the coolest or most secret places in London, walk towards the back streets of the market.

There’s always something new I see there!

Harrods is one of the best places to go shopping in London, there’s no doubt about it.

Whether you’re looking for luxury makeup brands, perfume, shoes or even food, you’ll find it at Harrods.

But what I love coming here for is actually the statues and the Egyptian art.

Whether you’re getting electronics or bags, you’ll find a statue or an interactive experience at seemingly every corner of Harrods.

The Egyptian Hall at Harrods is probably the craziest sight you’ll see that day.

And it’s actually not as old as it seems, since the works for the Egyptian Hall sculptures and decor took place at the beginning of the 1990s.

In any case, that Egyptian art goes on and one for seven floors in total.

And it is one of the most unusual sights in London, that to see Egyptian decor in a department store.

That’s definitely what makes it special, though!

Parallel to Bond Street, which hosts some of the most magnificent luxury shops in London, Burlington Arcade is stunning especially at Christmas.

From shoe shops to jewelry, you’ll find everything you need here in terms of presents and treats.

I took this picture last Christmas, and definitely think that Burlington Arcade is one of the best places to see Christmas decorations in London.

Very close to the Royal Opera house, on Broad Street, you have a statue of a young ballerina.

This is one of my favorite hidden gems in London, simply because the dancer statue echoes the ballets you can see at the Royal Opera House.

The young ballerina statue has been around since 1988, and is the work of a sculptor named Enzo Plazzotta.

While this is one of the most famous of his works, you can see other statues of his around London, my favorite being the Homage to Leonardo in Belgrave Square.

Yes, there are lots of amazing free museums in London, but hidden gems are definitely what makes a city even more special.

In the City of London, not too far from Fenchurch Street and Bishopsgate, during the year, you can find an art trail.

Called Art in the City, it offers plenty of different sculptures of all kinds. The one pictured above was taken right in front of Fenchurch Street Station, but I’ve found many more.

For instance, in my guide to the most colorful spots in London, you can find a metallic red house – pretty cool, huh?

Next to South Kensington Station, you have the Bela Bartok memorial, yet another one of the most beautiful statues in my opinion.

Bela Bartok is one of the most famous composers of the 20th Century, originally from Hungary.

His music was known for mixing different genres, including folk elements – that’s why he is considered an innovator in terms of music.

Although there’s not much to do except taking a picture of the Bela Bartok Memorial, if you’re looking for cool cafes in South Kensington, there’s a really large Pret a Manger.

Also, a short walk away, you have another one of the best hidden gems in London; Michelangelo’s David at the V&A Museum.

I absolutely love everything that relates to Italy, from Italian cafes in London to sculptures and paintings.

I only visited Florence once, but it’s one of the most magical cities in Italy in my opinion.

If you don’t have the chance to visit Florence but would still like to enjoy a piece of history and art, check out the replica of Michelangelo’s David.

The original David sculpture can be found in the Galleria dell’Accademia, right in the heart of Florence.

But between sculpted tombs, columns and sculptures, this cast, which has been at the V&A Museum since 1857, is still one of the best hidden gems in London.

Not too far from the V&A Museum, if you have the time, pay a visit to the Saatchi Gallery.

It is another one of the cool and free museums in London, and well worth a visit for contemporary works.

In honor of Earth Day, another sculpture by Gillie and Marc has been installed just outside of the Westfield White City shopping center.

Right in front of it, you have a big Costa Coffee, which is one of the best cafes to work in West London.

You’re close to all the shops, and the cafe is pretty big. Plus, after work, you can pay a visit to the new Bath & Body Works shop!

In this sculpture, we see Dogman and Rabbitwoman again, carrying the same rhino that we can see in Paternoster Square.

One of the still best hidden gems in London Bridge is, in my opinion, Hay’s Galleria.

There, if you’re looking for cute restaurants and cafes in London Bridge, you can see Cafe Piazza, which I’ve written several reviews about.

Hay’s Galleria is a historic gallery which used to be called Hay’s Wharf, and exists since the middle of the 19th Century.

The Navigators shop installed in the middle of Hay’s Galleria reminds us of the ancient use of the old warehouse, which was to distribute tea, coffee and the such from the port of London.

During the summer, it’s normal to see Hay’s Galleria decorated with flowers, while during Christmas, beautiful lights illuminate the gallery.

It’s not the only one you’ll find in London, as there is another one in the backyard of Southwark Cathedral – although they are in different positions.

I love finding new Shakespeare statues in London; it’s one of the things that just gets me excited for no reason.

I am also excited when finding new Amy Winehouse street art in London, from the Amy Winehouse statue in Camden Town to murals with the artist’s face.

I found this one near Borough Market, but there are literally dozens in London that make for a really fun day out!

I will talk about street art in Soho below, and well, one of the best hidden gems in London is located right in the heart of that neighborhood.

Named Orange Yard, the small street is adorned with some beautiful art with an orange tree.

Best known for its nightlife, the Soho area is still amazing for a stroll and a bite.

All around, you have lots of cool cafes, including Foyles Charing Cross Road.

There is lots of amazing street art in Soho, and every time I take a walk in the area, I almost always find some new street art to photograph.

Street art in Soho is part of the local lifestyle – you can indeed find some of the coolest streetwear shops in London in that area, from Supreme to Stussy.

There are lots of amazing halal restaurants in Soho, but I have to admit that the hundreds of times I’ve been there, I wasn’t really looking for food.

No, there are lots of amazing study cafes in Soho too, which include, obviously, Caffè Nero.

If you know, you know.

One of the newest pieces of street art in Soho is the portrait of late Queen Elizabeth II.

Yet, you’ll also find tons of graffiti, large murals and small ‘Fassion is My Pashion’ writings in the whole area.

The Soho Square Hut is one of the pretty landmarks of London, more local in a way than places like Tower Bridge or the Shard.

Just because it’s really one of those places that make you feel like you’re a true Londoner when using it as a meeting point with friends.

Soho Square is one of the best parks in London for picnics and romantic dates, and during the summer, it’s an amazing spot to hang out in the evening.

Also, not too far, you have two cool places to eat in Soho:

  • Elan Cafe on Wardour Street
  • and Cafe de Nata on Old Compton Street.

Both offer some really cool, cute cakes in a very different vibe one from the other.

Muswell Hill is one of the prettiest neighborhoods in London.

Luckily, when I lived in North Finchley, I would pass by this area all the time.

On one side of Muswell Hill, you have Finchley, and on the other side, Highgate, Islington, Angel, and then King’s Cross.

It is to me one of the best hidden gems in London, because you can have beautiful free views of London from Muswell Hill.

The architecture is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian, and the whole of Muswell Hill just really makes you feel like you’re in one of the cutest village areas in London.

Even one of the coolest restaurants in Muswell Hill, Miller & Carter Steakhouse, boasts a crazy stunning architecture.

If that’s not one of the most instagrammable restaurants in London, I don’t know what is!

It’s located up North, which is more elevated, and if you’re looking for second hand designer clothes at some point, there are lots of amazing charity shops in Muswell Hill.

Close to Monmouth St and Seven Dials Market, you have one of the most colorful places in London, and not so much of a hidden gem if you are a Londoner.

The tiny shopping area hosts Slice Pizza, though, and that’s still one of the cheapest pizza spots in London.

A beautiful stencil street art piece depicts late Princess Diana with her two sons, too, right in the entrance of Neal’s Yard.

Another two of the best hidden gems in London are the couple of statues by Stephan Balkenhol, at 1 More London.

This is an area that offers some of the best things to do in London Bridge, from art to study cafes, and from restaurants to green spaces.

There might be plenty of amazing places to see nature in London, but I’ve always felt very much at peace in the Queens Walk Gardens.

That is, to me, one of the best places to write in London, if that’s your vibe.

The two statues at One More London represent a woman and a man who seem to be a couple.

They were made out of wood, and both face London Bridge Station and The Shard.

However, when you walk the other way on One More London, you have here one of the best photo spots in London, with Tower Bridge in the background.

Gifted from Italy to the UK, this statue has been in the same spot for half a century, and is located right in the middle of Mayfair, on Carlos Place.

All around, you will also find stunning architecture, as well as another one of the best hidden gems in London, that we’re going to see right below.

One of the most secret gardens in London is Mount Street Gardens, which hosts the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

It is located really close to the Nymph statue, in Mayfair, and really feels like a slice of heaven in the heart of London.

It’s a really quiet place, so if you’re looking for good places to read in London, write, or just relax, there are plenty of benches at Mount Street Gardens.

And honestly, if you’re looking for green spaces in London, this spot and the Inner Temple Gardens are two of those secret spots.

I love the Tottenham Court Road area – always have, always will.

There are plenty of cafes to work in Tottenham Court Road, as well as cute restaurants and lots of big shops.

Mainly furniture shops, to be honest.

Well, one of the best hidden gems in London is the Timothy Oulton shop, which offers the most incredible, posh and stylish furniture you’ve ever seen.

Shoreditch isn’t one of the best hidden gems in London, it’s so famous!.

Yes, but.

If instead of going to Brick Lane (but if you do, go to the Kahaila coffee shop, by all means!), you cross Bethnal Green Road and go towards Shoreditch High Street, you’ll find lots of hidden street art.

There are several murals in Shoreditch that are very much worthwhile, and amazing depictions of flowers, people, and graffiti.

My favorite mural in Shoreditch is the one depicted above, but you can find plenty of Banksy art around the area too as well as neon pink and black faces.

There are quite a few Harry Potter shops in London, but my favorite is by far House of Spells on Charing Cross Road.

I’ve always been kind of disappointed that there weren’t more Harry Potter locations in London, to be honest.

But I mean, we have the Millenium Bridge and Shaftesbury Avenue, so there’s that, at least.

In any case, one of the best hidden gems in London is House of Spells, which sells absolutely everything Harry Potter.

Everything you could wish for, really, from replicas of the Philosopher’s Stone to small statues and soft toys.

And perfect if you don’t want to shop at the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studios in Leavesden!

I’m always looking to find new hidden statues in London, and one I was really excited about was the Herd of Hope.

21 elephant statues are scattered all around Spitalfields, and each represents a real elephant who has been separated from its mother.

You can actually find the statue of the mother elephant right in the middle of Brushfield Street, a street really close to Liverpool Street Station and the Polo Bar cafe.

The artists, Gillie and Marc, are the same artists who designed the Wild Table of Love in Paternoster Square.

They’re also the ones who designed the 28 chimp statues in London Bridge (which have since then been moved to Kingston).

Located on Royal College St, between Camden Town and Kentish Town, you have a pub called the Old Eagle.

The first time I passed by, turned around and saw The Simpsons mural, I was shocked.

I kept snapping shots so I could get the most perfect picture possible, as clearly, no one can say otherwise – this is one of the best hidden gems in London.

I absolutely love everything Simpsons-related; from makeup collections to clothes, accessories…

Everything.

The mural is perfectly preserved, and definitely one of those secret places in London perfect for The Simpsons fans.

There are quite a few neon places in London, but the cheapest (since it’s free) is the Infinity Chamber in Covent Garden.

The LEDs change color according to the time of the year, and you can find the Infinity Chamber either completely white or rainbow-colored.

Located in Conduit Court, it’s one of the coolest instagrammable places in London, and when you walk through it, you will reach Floral Street.

Floral Street is another one of the prettiest streets in London, which is decorated with lights at Christmas time.

Plus, you’ll find yourself in a super aesthetic spot that hosts Bageriet, one of the tastiest Swedish bakeries in London (their Princess cake is astonishing!).
