Colorful Houses of Notting Hill: 15 Aesthetic London Spots

colorful streets in notting hill west london travel guide - free things to do near portobello road multicolor rows houses - most colorful places in london off the beaten path

A local’s guide to the most colorful streets and houses in Notting Hill – from Farmer Street to St Luke’s Mews, Lancaster Road and Portobello Road!

You can find spots with lots of color all over London, even in the most hidden corners.

I remember one year when I was working in Walthamstow, I was on the bus heading toward Lower Clapton and I caught a glimpse of a street with houses in every color of the rainbow in the distance.

I cannot remember the exact address, but it is definitely one of my favorite memories from when I first moved to the city.

Notting Hill is one of the poshest and most polished parts of London, but you can still find plenty of cute cafes for breakfast, vintage storefronts, and one of the most famous markets around at Portobello Road.

It is the kind of place that belongs on your itinerary whether you are visiting for a single day or staying for ten.

Even if you already live in London, you will always stumble across new shops and little secrets hidden in that neighborhood.

What I really love about it is not just the charity shops, but the quiet mews streets and the long rows of colorful houses.

In this guide, we’ll see some of the most colorful streets in London, and even one, Basing Street just off the famous Lancaster Road, which offers really unexpected street art.

If you’ve heard of Lancaster Road before, it offers some of the most beautiful and colorful houses in Notting Hill.

Yet, there are many more roads, streets, and mews in the area, from Notting Hill Gate to Ladbroke Grove where you’ll find super colorful houses and rainbow rows.

Most of the pictures in this post are some I’ve taken last year while on a ‘colorful London’ spree, but I haven’t been able to take pictures of all the places I’ll mention here.

As such, I’ve completed it with some pictures of people who have actually been able to snap shots – enjoy!

The whole of Portobello Road, located very close to Notting Hill Gate tube station, is a sight when you’re looking for super colorful streets in London.

It starts off from the station and the Sun in Splendour pub with some pastel houses from purple to pink and even dark grey in the quieter area of Portobello Road.

When you continue on Portobello Road, you arrive at the famous Portobello Road Market.

On the road, you’ll find anything from Maison Puget, an amazing French patisserie, to Poundland, one of the most useful budget shops in London.

If you’re looking for the most colorful streets in London, Portobello Road definitely is one of them.

I’ve done countless photoshoots there when I was still doing makeup.

Well, if you’re coming to take pictures of the instagrammable cafes and colorful houses, I’d recommend coming when the market isn’t there.

You’ll still be able to take lots of pictures even when Portobello Road Market is on, but it will be a tad more difficult as there are lots of people visiting, especially at weekends.

Basically, all the most colorful streets in Notting Hill and rainbow rows of houses are located off Portobello Road.

As much on the left as on the right of the road when you come from Notting Hill Gate station.

Denbigh Terrace is one of the first colorful streets you’ll find in Notting Hill, on the right of Portobello Road.

You really can’t miss it; it’s one of the best parts of Notting Hill, especially considering how clean and bright the colors of the houses are.

Chepstow Villas are also located right in the heart of Notting Hill, and you’ll find plenty of pretty pink houses, and blue and yellow houses there as well.

Super high, towering colorful houses compared to places like Tavistock Road and Denbigh Terrace, and really impressive.

The Chepstow Villas and Chepstow Crescent are among some of the best parts of Notting Hill, and with their pastel houses, they’re also super instagrammable.

Just off Portobello Road as well, you’ve got Colville Terrace.

I couldn’t take my own pictures because there were works in front of the red and blue houses last year, but Colville Terrace is one of the most famous colorful streets in Notting Hill as well.

Really worth visiting, especially since it’s literally thirty seconds away from Portobello Road, and one of the most soberly colorful places in the area.

When you enter Colville Terrace from Portobello Road (you really can’t miss it), take a left, cross the square, and you’ll see on your right Colville Houses.

I’ve done a photoshoot in front of the Colville Houses, and I honestly can’t believe why more people don’t talk about this place – maybe because it’s a bit tucked away.

These are some of the most colorful houses in Notting Hill, and probably in the whole of London as well.

Not only that, but the colors are really bright, and you can definitely see you’re in one of the best parts of Notting Hill when you step foot in Colville Houses.

When you continue down Portobello Road, you have what might very well be the most famous street of Notting Hill; Lancaster Road.

This is the best-known street when it comes to multicolor houses in London and you’ll find two rows facing each other with very different color schemes.

One side is really bright, from purple to yellow, mint, blue and red, and the other side is a bit more feminine with pink houses, teal, and light blue houses.

The side with the bright green, teal, light blue, and pink houses is my favorite, but it’s probably a bit less instagrammable since the sun hits on the other side of the road.

Most Colorful Places in London: Basing Street

Right off Lancaster Road, you’ve got that beautiful street art piece off the side of a house – and the fact that it’s also located close to St Luke’s Mews makes it a double must-visit.

If you’re looking for street art in Notting Hill, you’ll have to go down Portobello Road Market, as it’s where you’ll find street art in the area (much less in residential areas).

This mural in Basing Street is one of the most unexpected and cute sights in London.

I’ll probably write a full post about murals and frescoes in London at some point (since I’ve even found a Simpsons mural in Kentish Town!).

In the meantime, you’ve got Basing Street and its very own Bob Marley right off the famous Lancaster Road.

Most Colorful Streets in London: St Luke’s Mews

St Luke’s Mews is another one of the most colorful streets in Notting Hill, and probably one of my favorites.

If you love finding instagrammable places in London, you’ll probably have come across St Luke’s Mews and its beautiful pink house.

At the entrance of the mews, you also have a bright blue house with a yellow door, which is just as instagrammable.

And although we’re talking about mews, which are usually private, these beautiful mews are open for anyone to enter as long as you don’t disturb the people living there.

Most Colorful Streets in Notting Hill London: Westbourne Park Road

Westbourne Park Road is located really close to Lancaster Road, and it also offers another row of multicolor houses.

Really residential, and people usually don’t mind picture-takers.

Still, a lot of residents in the area also have signs on the threshold asking tourists to refrain from getting on their stairs to take pictures.

Westbourne Park Road definitely is less colorful than Lancaster Road and Portobello Road.

But if you’re going on a full spree to find all the colorful streets in Notting Hill, it’s another one you shouldn’t miss.

Tavistock Road is located in the middle of Portobello Road, on the right.

You’re right in the heart of Portobello Road’s shops, and as you’re walking from Notting Hill Gate all the way down Portobello Road, you cannot miss Tavistock Road.

We’ve got a more sober vibe here; the colorful houses here are cooler-toned, with blue, red, and cream houses.

The street goes on with more ‘normal’ houses, and I’ve found that only the first portion will be interesting if what you’re after are properly colorful streets in Notting Hill.

There’s a square in front of the houses where you can rest for a bit before you keep going to grab breakfast in Notting Hill, or just keep shopping.

When you come from Notting Hill Gate tube station, take a left on Hillgate Street, a right on Uxbridge Street, and a left on Callcott Street.

Then, you’ll see another beautiful area filled with some of the most colorful houses in Notting Hill.

The whole of the area around Uxbridge Street, along with Farmer Street and Farm Place is filled with rainbow rows.

The only reason why it’s a bit less famous than Lancaster Road is that it’s on the other side of the road.

Still, you have nearby both Ole and Steen and Pret a Manger (useful if you’re ever looking for cafes to work in Notting Hill).

Right before you get to Callcott Street, you’ll find Hillgate Street, which also offers some of the most colorful houses in Notting Hill.

There are lots, and the neighboring streets like Farmer Street, Farm Place, and Uxbridge Road are also filled with beautiful rainbow rows.

Again, you’ll find these colorful houses are located on the other side of Notting Hill Gate – not on the same side as Portobello Road, Lancaster Road, and Denbigh Terrace.

They’re still very much places worth visiting in Notting Hill, especially if you’re looking for some motivation before going to study in a cafe for a while.

But when you keep going and take a right on St John’s Gardens, you’ll find Lansdowne Road.

This is further off Portobello Road by a mere 10/15-minute walk.

You’ll find another Notting Hill rainbow row there, with some beautiful pastel houses and stunning architecture. The area is a bit quieter since it’s much more residential than Portobello Road.

We’re starting to stray from Portobello Road and the heart of Notting Hill big time with Norland Place, which is located a few minutes away from Holland Park station.

One of my favorite things to do in London when I’m alone is to go to the Kyoto Garden and the Dutch Garden in Holland Park.

These are two of the most colorful places in London, and two of the most relaxing as well provided you come when there’s no one (so early or late in the evening).

Norland Place offers another row of colorful houses in one of the most underrated mews in London – that’s a fact.

Really worth visiting if you want to get around and take pictures of all the colorful streets in London before going back home.
