A local’s guide to the best things to do in West Hampstead, North West London, from shops to secret gardens, coffee shops and must-visit spots!
When you walk around the West Hampstead area, in North West London, it’s pretty crazy to see just how posh and pretty the streets are, only to become more lively around West End Lane and Kilburn High Street on the other side.
As an ex au pair in West Hampstead, I’ve enjoyed lazy walks to the shops in Kilburn, the picturesque houses of Swiss Cottage, and the shopping center in Finchley more times than I can recall.
With its relaxed village vibe, its cute cafes and local restaurants, West Hampstead is perfect to visit during a day out in London‘s north side.
London’s West Hampstead: 7 Things to Do in the Pretty Area

There’s always something to do in West Hampstead, let’s start there.
Whether it’s walking to Kilburn High Road to discover amazing charity shops (some of the cheapest I’ve found in London, by the way) or having a delicious cupcake or pastry at Lola’s Bakery on West End Lane, there are many places to have the greatest time in the area.
Plus, since West Hampstead is on the Jubilee Line and just a few stations away from Wembley Park, you always have the option of doing more budget shopping at the London Designer Outlet there.
Anyhoo – whether you’re into nature, shopping, food, or culture, I’ve chosen to share with you seven of my favorite things to do in West Hampstead: take notes!
Best Things to Do in West Hampstead: Discover Beautiful Architecture

If West End Lane is the most famous street in the West Hampstead area, pretty much all the adjoining streets offer beautiful architecture, from Messina Avenue to West Hampstead Mews, a pretty cobblestone street perfect for pictures.
Making your way on foot from West Hampstead station to Swiss Cottage on the other side offers sights of gorgeous towering mansions that feel like you’ve jumped back in time, like in Greencroft Gardens (pictured above).
If you have the time, make sure you pop by some of the pocket parks West Hampstead is so generous with, like Fortune Green or West End Green for a picnic with friends, a lazy stroll or a moment solo with a good book.

Another great spot to visit while you’re in the area is the Hampstead Cemetery – granted, it’s not one of the Seven Magnificent cemeteries, but it offers a peaceful vibe and otherwise striking architecture.
If you get hungry after your walk, make your way to West End Lane for a well-deserved coffee at Costa Coffee (currently the only branch in London with a basement curated for freelancers and students!) or a slice of carrot cake at Lola’s Bakery for more vintage vibes.

If, however, you’d like a more substantial lunch, head on over to Sushi Tokoro on Broadhurst Gardens; one of the most secret and amazing Japanese restaurants you’ll ever dine at.

Best Things to Do in West Hampstead: Stroll Along West End Lane

Talking about West Hampstead without mentioning West End Lane would be a crime – it’s the heart and soul of the area, lined with independent shops, cozy cafes and restaurants.
Start at the West Hampstead station and make your way down to House of Books for a few new titles, grab a coffee at The CoffeeWorks Project or, for more shopping, walk the 10 minutes down to Kilburn High Road for Primark, Poundland and other Superdrug and Boots.
If you happen to visit during the weekend, make sure you pop by the West Hampstead Farmers Market for the freshest produce around!

Best Things to Do in West Hampstead: Check Out Independent Bookshops

I absolutely love going book shopping in London – and visiting any kind of literary spot too, to be fair.
Whether it’s exploring a charming independent bookstore, wandering through a stunning library, or browsing a huge Waterstones, I always know I’ll find something special.
If you’re around West End Lane, make sure to check out the lovely indie bookshops there – West End Lane Books and House of Books are absolute gems.
Oh, and House of Books has another branch in the chic Muswell Hill area too, should you ever find yourself there.
And if you’re planning a visit to Hampstead Heath (which you totally should!), there’s a gorgeous branch of Daunt Books close by.
There’s also a super famous one in Marylebone, a beautiful neighborhood just a quick hop from Oxford Street – perfect for book hunting and gorgeous views!

Best Things to Do in West Hampstead: Visit Hampstead Heath and Discover the Pergola & Hill Garden
When you’re in West Hampstead, a trip to Hampstead Heath is an absolute must!
This massive park, dating back to 1840, is the perfect escape if you’re craving some greenery in London.
Whether you’re up for a relaxing walk, a swim, or just soaking in nature, Hampstead Heath has something for everyone.
While you’re there, make sure to visit the stunning Pergola and Hill Garden. Built in the early 20th century, the Pergola is a hidden gem with its climbing plants, wisteria, and elegant vines.
It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding gardens and is one of London’s most secret and beautiful photo spots – and the best part?
It’s completely free to visit!
If you’re into discovering cute hidden gardens, this one’s a total winner.
Right next to the Pergola is the Hill Garden, which feels like a little slice of Paris with its terraced design, quiet paths, and flowers everywhere you turn.
I’ve spent countless hours here, either working on my laptop or curling up with a book: there are many benches there, and it’s just that peaceful.
Whether you’re flying solo or planning a romantic date, the Hill Garden is a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy nature at its finest.

Best Things to Do in West Hampstead: Catch a Show at the Hampstead Theatre

In case you decide to stay in the area after visiting Hampstead Heath and going shopping, a moment at the Hampstead Theatre on Eton Avenue is perfect for innovative performances.
We’re not far from West Hampstead station, and even closer to Swiss Cottage, so you can easily walk from West End Lane to the theatre.
What’s interesting about this theatre is that over the years, it’s premiered several notable productions, which have then gone on to enjoy successful runs in the West End.
Why not go shopping at the O2 shopping center higher up on Finchley Road, get some food or coffee at Rosemary Cafe (one of the lesser-known, and cutest cafes in London!), and head to the Hampstead Theatre for a good show?

Now, for street food lovers; if you’re down to try new bits and bobs, make sure you pop by the West Hampstead Farmers Market!
The market is on every Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm right outside the West Hampstead Thameslink station, and you’ll find everything there from fresh produce to breakfast bits, and even stalls selling delicious ethnic street food.

If you don’t want to have lunch at the Farmers Market, or if it’s just too cold to nibble on some food while walking around, try out Banana Tree for a heartwarming meal.
With a tasty offer mixing Malaysian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai and Singaporean dishes, Banana Tree is great to try something new – there are even lots of vegetarian and vegan bits on the menu!

If you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy, Kilburn High Road is the place to be – stretching from Kilburn to West Hampstead, if offers everything from unique shops and charities to high-street favorites like Boots, Primark, or even TK Maxx.
Start at Kilburn High Road station on the Jubilee Line and Overground, and explore spots like Superdrug and Boots for drugstore makeup brands, TK Maxx for cheap and amazing scented candles, and other charity shops lining the street.
