It is indeed one of the best beaches near Rome, located about 60 km and a really cute coastal town to visit before you go lie on the sand.

Where some of the beaches in this guide are more mainstream when it comes to tourists visiting Rome for the first time, Santa Marinella has this more local feel.

Pop by the Odescalchi Castle when you’re in town, one of Santa Marinella’s landmarks, to discover the town’s background and history.

Best Beaches Near Rome by Train: Sperlonga Beach

Sperlonga Beach is located much farther away from Rome than Santa Marinella, and you’ll find it by taking the train to the province of Latina.

One of the best hidden gems near Rome, the Giardino di Ninfa, is located in Latina so it could be a great idea to do both the same day.

Sperlonga Beach is one of the only really turquoise beaches near Rome you can easily access by train.

In a little over an hour, you’re there, in a beautiful coastal town which not only offers clear waters but also charming cafes and seafood restaurants.

You’ll also find the Grotto of Tiberius in Sperlonga, an enticing cave which contains reliefs and sculptures dating back to the 1st century BC.

Sperlonga makes for one of the best day trips from Rome if you’d like to be back in time for that booking at one of the delicious restaurants in Trastevere.

Make sure to pack that sunscreen, though – the Roman sun is unforgiving.

Best Beaches Near Rome by Train: Nettuno

Nettuno is another one of the best beaches near Rome, easily accessible in about an hour from Rome.

A really quiet coastal town in which you’ll be able to discover a stunning Medieval Quarter with narrow streets that would almost make you think of Edinburgh.

Nettuno also offers a 16th century fortress from which you can get stunning views on the beach.

Another place to visit in Nettuno is the port, a lively marina of which you can take pictures after a fresh lunch at a nearby waterfront restaurant.

Anzio, like Nettuno, is one of the closest beaches near Rome, and directly accessible by train from Termini station.

What I like doing is getting breakfast in Rome in the morning at Martinucci Laboratory in Termini or Molino Bakery closeby.

After which I’ll hop on the train, walk around Anzio Harbor for a bit to enjoy the view of the boats and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

There are a couple of things to do in Anzio that don’t only include sunbathing, though.

The Santuario di Santa Maria Goretti, often associated with Anzio even if it’s located in nearby Nettuno, and the beautiful Villa Adele.

You’ll find many beautiful villas around Rome, and this historic villa, which used to belong to actress Greta Garbo, often hosts cool exhibitions.

Anzio is a historical coastal town, since it was the stage for the Allied landing during the WWII, and you can visit the town’s museum to learn more about its fascinating history.

One of my favorite things to do in Rome at night is to see the sunset.

The sunset in Rome is something magical, inspiring even, when you know where to spot it.

Well, if you take the Lido Train about 35/40 minutes from Basilica San Paolo station in Rome, you’ll be able to spot one of the best sunsets in your life at Ostia Lido Beach.

I’ve spent many, many days lazing around on the sand and in the water at Ostia Lido Beach, which offers amazing restaurants, cafes, and free beaches.

Indeed, in Italy, part of the beaches are not freely accessible, and that’s also the case at Ostia Lido Beach. Walk for about 5 minutes, and you’ll reach the free beach.

Ostia is one of the best beaches near Rome because it’s so easily accessible by train, and really cheap too – 3 euros round trip for the train.

In addition, the Baths of Neptune and the archaeological site of Ostia Antica are two attractions you should not miss – especially the ruins, which will remind you strongly of Pompeii.

Located about 100 km from Rome, Terracina offers some of the best Roman, Pre-Roman and medieval artifacts and art pieces.

The coastal town’s main cathedral, Cathedral of San Cesareo, is another must-visit spot, especially if you love architecture. Baroque, Romanesque, the cathedral’s interior is mindblowing.

And to see the best views in Terracina, head on over to the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, located on a hill which towers the countryside and the city unapologetically.
