In this guide, you’ll probably see some laptop friendly cafes in New York City that you’ve actually already seen on The Working Line.

Indeed, some of the best cafes in Manhattan to study, from The Roost to the Book Club, are located in the East Village.

Later on, I will be writing about some of the best coffee shops to work in Chelsea as well as other spots from the Upper East Side to Lower Manhattan and even places like Astoria and Queens – so stay tuned for that.

For now, we are going to be focusing on the best study spots in East Village; some of the best working coffee shops in NYC with free WiFi, great coffee, and power outlets where possible.

Best Cafes to Work in East Village NYC: The Roost

One of the very best cafes to work in East Village NYC is The Roost, which is not only a coffee shop. Indeed, it offers a pretty wide sitting area and a bar at the end of the shop.

The Roost is located on Avenue B in Alphabet City, and it offers amazing coffee as well as power outlets and free WiFi.

It’s basically a really spacious area where you will find tables, armchairs, and really comfortable sofas on which you can sit for hours to do some very productive work.

It’s not unusual to find freelancers, students, and digital nomads working at The Roost as it’s clearly a spot where you feel at home.

In my opinion, one of the best coffee shops to study in East Village before the place turns into a full-on bar and party place at night.

Best Laptop Friendly Cafe in NYC East Village: Perk Kafe

There are several Perk Kafe coffee shops in NYC; one of them is located on the Upper East Side and the other one is in the East Village.

This is not one of the biggest laptop friendly cafes in New York City.

Still, when you’re around the East Village and want to find a good working coffee shop, Perk Kafe is actually a productivity-triggering place.

Perk Kafe closes pretty early (like most coffee shops in New York City), but the atmosphere is friendly, heartwarming, and definitely appropriate if you are looking for a laptop friendly cafe in East Village.

If you want to try it out, it is open from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM most days of the week, and you have quite a few tables and free WiFi. Up to you to decide whether you want to relax, read a good book, or work on your laptop for a few hours.

Best Cafes to Work in East Village NYC: Coffee Project

Coffee Project has quite a few branches scattered throughout Manhattan, but the one we are focused on today is located on 5th Ave, not too far from Bowery.

The coffee shop has quite a few interesting recipes when it comes to their drinks, especially the Deconstructed Latte and some really good classic coffee to start the day.

Coffee Project is not the biggest cafe in East Village to study, however, there are a few seats, free WiFi, and a few power outlets scattered throughout the coffee shop.

I would definitely recommend you come as early as possible as Coffee Project reserves some of the tables for people who are just planning to get a drink and a bite and get on with their day – so just keep that in mind before you visit.

Best Cafes to Study in NYC East Village: The Bean

Now, if you are looking for very spacious cafes to work in East Village NYC, you are going to love The Bean.

It is a really huge coffee shop in which you will find a few tables in the front and the back of the shop, and you are bound to find freelancers, students, and digital nomads really grinding on their laptops.

The Bean coffee shop is located on 2nd Avenue, right in the heart of the East Village, and you have free WiFi as well as power outlets which should allow you to work for a good few hours when you visit.

Given just how many people are typing away on their laptops at The Bean every hour of the day, it’s clearly one of these study coffee shops in NYC that you can count on – especially since it’s open from 7 am to 9 pm every single day.

Best Cafes in East Village To Study: Book Club

I told you about the Book Club in my guide to the best cafes to work in Manhattan, and as we’re talking about coffee shops to study in East Village, you will find that the Book Club provides an atmosphere that you cannot find or feel anywhere else in New York City.

The Book Club is much more than just a coffee shop. Located in Alphabet City on Avenue B, it is also a library and a place where you will be able to share and connect with the community.

The Book Club organizes workshops and activities throughout the month, and it’s open from 8 am to 12 am every single day.

It’s a really cozy place to study, and lots of people come with their laptops and books to study, work a little bit throughout the day, or just read. I mean, it’s an indie bookstore, after all.

That is why I would recommend you come as early as you can as the Book Club is a really popular study coffee shop in the East Village: it fills up quickly, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on that vibe.

Best Cafes to Work in East Village NYC: Ninth Street Espresso

Ninth Street Espresso is the coffee shop I would recommend if you’re looking for utterly amazing coffee in Alphabet City.

It is not the biggest coffee shop at all, however, you can get some really good work done there.

Ninth Street Espresso on 9th Street is actually bigger than some of the other branches of the cafe (like the one on 10th Street, just a few steps away), so you will be able to use the free WiFi for a good while and really just grind till you drop.

Just make sure you’re not coming with a full workday planned as I do feel there are many other cafes to work in East Village NYC better suited for that.

Best Coffee Shops to Work in NYC East Village: Kona Coffee

Kona Coffee is one of the most famous cafes in the East Village to study, just because it is quite wide, has great opening hours, and offers delicious Hawaiian coffee beans.

Kona Coffee is located near Bowery, super easily accessible from Bleecker Street station, and you have a lot of seating space inside.

Given how cozy (understand: tiny) a lot of the New York coffee shops are, it’s easy to understand why students or freelancers come in flocks whenever there is an inspiring (understand: big) space to do work around the corner.

You might have to share your table with someone else, but since Kona Coffee is open from 7:00 AM till 7:00 PM almost every day of the week, you might actually have some space to yourself for a while if you come early.

Best Cafes to Work in East Village NYC: Everyman Espresso

Next up, you have Everyman Espresso – a decently-sized coffee shop in East Village either which also offers free WiFi and amazing coffee.

Everyman Espresso has a good number of tables which you will probably have to share.

However, since many of the people visiting are also students or freelancers, you will definitely have that motivating atmosphere around you.

Everyman Espresso is bright and airy, and with that quirky decor blended with classic minimalism, you’ve got here one of the best cafes to work in East Village.

And if you are ever looking for a cafe to work in Brooklyn, Everyman Espresso also has another branch on Park Slope which can come in handy whenever you’re in the area.

Best Study Spots East Village NYC: Elsewhere Espresso

Elsewhere Espresso is located close to 2nd Avenue, and it’s probably one of the cutest coffee shops to work in East Village.

Granted, you don’t have the biggest cafe here, but Elsewhere Espresso is laptop friendly and has some of the best coffee in New York City.

For starters, you have very friendly staff there and Elsewhere Espresso offers free Wifi inside and outside.

The staff is super friendly, the decor is inspiring – what more could we wish for?

The 6th Street coffee shop is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day of the week, and if you’re looking for the best cafes to work in East Village, you’re definitely going to find yourself very productive there. 

However, I would definitely recommend coming there as early as possible as it’s definitely a hidden gem when it comes to finding super cool laptop friendly cafes to study in NYC.

Best Cafes to Work in East Village NYC: B Cup Cafe

If you like really colorful and instagrammable cafes, another great option if you’re looking to do some productive work and study, is B Cup Cafe on Avenue B.

Make sure to bring cash, as B Cup Cafe does not accept credit cards.

You’ve not only got amazing pastries and great coffee at B Cup Cafe but also free and super fast Wifi and a spacious study spot.

The coffee shop is really vivid in all senses of the word and echoes the artistic atmosphere of the East Village to perfection.

Whether you’re trying to finish your novel, write an article or study while having coffee shop sounds in the background, B Cup Cafe is one of the best options for whoever has an artistic streak in your personality.

Best Cafes in East Village To Study: Pause Cafe

Another one of the best cafes to work in East Village is actually one I already mentioned here on The Working Line.

Pause Cafe is run by a Moroccan owner, something that I always feel close to as I’m half French and half Moroccan.

Obviously, in a Moroccan coffee shop, you would find delicious and super sweet Moroccan pastries, but Pause Cafe also offers great coffee, and lunch bites if you’re planning to stay the day.

There is free Wifi, and just a few power outlets throughout the whole coffee shop, so make sure you come with your laptop and your phone charged.

The coffee shop is open from 7 am to 8 pm most days of the week, so you have plenty of time to be super productive.

If you’re looking for the best working coffee shops in NYC around the East Village, Pause Cafe is one of the most spacious options whether you want to study for a few hours or do some journaling.

Best Coffee Shops to Work in NYC East Village: Froth New York

Froth is located on the Lower East Side, at the limit with the East Village, and it’s open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. most days of the week.

There, you’ve got everything you might be wishing for when looking for a working coffee shop, from alternative milk to great pastries, and some really interesting coffee recipes including the must-try Lavender coffee.

This is another one of the best cafes to work in East Village NYC because Froth offers lots of seating space as well as an airy, superbright atmosphere.

What you’ll most enjoy about Froth is the fact that you can stay there for a few hours while working on your laptop, since the cafe offers fast Wifi as well as a restroom.

Since restrooms are not part of all the working coffee shops in New York City, it is interesting to note that Froth indeed has one – especially if you’re planning to stay the day.

787 Coffee has a few branches around town, and they also have a small and welcoming coffee shop in the East Village to study.

Since it is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. every single day, it is definitely a great study spot if you have to work on your midterms, on your laptop, or just read a good book.

Great coffee, great wi-fi, and amazing service from the staff who really seems to be enjoying their job.

One of the best coffee shops to work in NYC if you have some light work to do or just want to stay for a bit.

Indeed, while I do consider it one of the best cafes to work in East Village, be aware that there are no toilets at 787 Coffee.

Best Cafes in East Village To Study: Hi-Note

Hi-Note is actually not a coffee shop but New York’s first Radio Bar, and it’s open from 8 am to 12 am except at weekends, when it closes at 2 am.

It looks a little bit like a mix of a coffee shop and a hotel lobby when you enter Hi-Note, and they’ve got everything you might need when looking for cafes to work in East Village.

You have power outlets scattered throughout the entire floor as well as very strong and free Wifi.

In addition, the space is super comfortable to work from; an inspiring background with nice background music and friendly staff.

Come early during the day, well before Hi-Note comes alive with the music if you want to enjoy the quiet space.

When you have to work for a good few hours, Hi-Note might not be a coffee shop, but it’s still one of the best study spots in the East Village.
