Having lived in Bethnal Green and Mile End for over a year before moving on to Rome and then North London, I have eaten many times in a few of the Whitechapel restaurants, from Sushi Masago to Dulce Coffee and Grounded.

There’s something about Whitechapel, Aldgate, and Brick Lane that gets me excited as soon as I hear the names, and I felt that today was right to tell you about all the best restaurants in Whitechapel.

Whether you’re looking for places to eat breakfast in Whitechapel or some of the best halal restaurants, you’ll find here all you’re looking for.

Today, although a lot of the best restaurants in Whitechapel East London are indeed halal (and I will mention which throughout this guide), I will be talking a bit about every type of restaurant you can find, from Creams Whitechapel to Sahara Grill for delicious steaks and burgers.

10 Best Restaurants in Whitechapel from Breakfast to Dinner

If you’ve never been to Whitechapel, this East London area located just two steps away from Brick Lane (and some of my favorite places to eat, Dark Sugars and Beigel Shop Brick Lane) is eclectic and colorful.

One of my favorite charity shops near Bethnal Green is actually the Islamic Relief shop on Whitechapel Road – one to visit whether you’re looking for secondhand clothes or used books.

The vibe in Whitechapel restaurants and coffee shops is very different than what you could find around Kings Road, Chelsea and High Street Kensington – here, you’ve got local food, fresh, traditional, and delicious.

Brick Lane is definitely more colorful, with tons of street art and cute study cafes like Kahaila, which are some of my favorites in London.

But today, no study cafes – we’re only going to be talking about the best restaurants in Whitechapel, and you’ll discover here lots of different cuisines from Turkish food to Full English breakfast – let’s get on!

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Sahara Grill

Sahara Grill isn’t only one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel; with other branches in Hounslow, Leyton, Ilford, and Dubai, the chain of completely halal restaurants is well-known in London.

Indeed, Sahara Grill offers a whole menu composed of halal burgers, halal steaks, and other halal fried chicken (no pork, no alcohol served).

That’s not all, whether you’re feeling fancy with a lamb or beef steak or more junkey with Sahara Grill’s special halal fried chicken wings, you’ll find everything you need in this Whitechapel restaurant.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and I’d be lying if I didn’t say that Sahara Grill is one of the most visited restaurants in Whitechapel.

From the clean and sophisticated decor to the efficient menu, Sahara Grill is the perfect spot to take your other half or dine with your friends after a long day of work.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Grounded

I’ve mentioned Grounded – also called Grounded Coffee Company – quite a few times on The Working Line already.

It is in my opinion one of the only Whitechapel restaurants that is perfect for every time of the day, and if it is one of the most instagrammable cafes in London in my opinion, it is because the interior is utterly cute.

It is not rare to see a queue of people waiting to enter the premises of this rustic yet super modern restaurant, which also offers a completely halal menu.

Whether you’re coming for a quick breakfast (vegan cakes and savory bites are available on the Grounded menu) or are looking to have a fully halal brunch in London, Grounded is the place for you.

In my opinion, it is also one of the best cafes to study in East London, if you’re coming outside of peak times.

I have lost count of the Full English breakfasts I have eaten in this Whitechapel restaurant, an institution of the area located two steps away from the Brick Lane markets.

However, if you’re feeling like delicious burgers and a dinner date, Grounded is open from breakfast till dinnertime, making it one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel overall.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Dulce Coffee

Dulce Coffee, like Grounded Coffee Company, is one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel in my opinion.

For starters, the menu is completely halal, and for me, who doesn’t eat pork, it is especially enjoyable to find a halal Full English breakfast on the menu that I can devour every bite of.

Dulce Coffee is another one of the halal restaurants in Whitechapel that aims to cater to every single patron passing the threshold; with vegetarian and vegan breakfast options on the menu, everyone can feel right at home at Dulce Coffee.

Although I now live in Tottenham, in North London, this is one of the only places to eat in Whitechapel that I actually take the time to travel to, because the menu is affordable, and you’ll clearly eat at Dulce Coffee some of the best breakfast in Whitechapel.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Creams Whitechapel

best restaurants in whitechapel east london - best places to eat in whitechapel - best whitechapel restaurants - breakfast in whitechapel - turkish restaurant in whitechapel - whitechapel restaurants halal - sushi whitechapel - creams whitechapel
Phtoo: UberEats

Creams Whitechapel is part of a chain of cafes slash dessert spots in London that offers some of the tastiest waffles you’ll ever eat – and that’s a fact.

The first Creams cafe opened in 2011, and from this time onwards, Creams has gained tremendous popularity among the London crowd.

If you’ve visited one of the other Whitechapel restaurants I’m mentioning in this guide and would like to finish on a – very – sweet note, then Creams is one of the places to eat in Whitechapel you really cannot miss.

It’s quite affordable unless you start ordering two or three desserts as I have a bad habit of doing.

You’ll find on the Creams menu lots of tasty warm waffles, crepes, amazing gelato, and my favorite – the strawberry cheesecake, one of the best cheesecakes in London.

If you’re hungry at night, Creams Whitechapel is actually open from 12 pm to 2 am, making it one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel any time you’re feeling like a sugar fix.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Circle & Slice

best restaurants in whitechapel east london - best places to eat in whitechapel - best whitechapel restaurants - breakfast in whitechapel - turkish restaurant in whitechapel - whitechapel restaurants halal - sushi whitechapel - circle and slice pizza whitechapel
Photo: TripAdvisor

Circle and Slice is the sister restaurant of the aforementioned Grounded Coffee Company, and while it operates on a very different menu, it is still one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel.

A while back, I wrote about all the best halal Italian restaurants in London, and it’s true that Circle and Slice should definitely be part of this guide.

At Circle and Slice, you’ll find lots of tasty Italian food.

Since it is one of the only spots for halal pizza in London, the fact that the pizza is made with sourdough and is super affordable, makes Circle and Slice a perfect spot if you’re looking for delicious fast food and halal restaurants in Whitechapel – a Margherita priced at £8, hello?

I lived in Rome for a year before moving back to London, and if you’ve been to The Working Line before, you know I’m crazy about anything from Italian coffee to the same kind of food you’ll find similar to street food in Rome.

Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options available.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: The Gourmet Hut

The Gourmet Hut is located higher up towards Stepney Green, on Cavell Street, and that’s the perfect spot if you’re looking for burger places to eat in Whitechapel.

It’s a really warm restaurant, with burgundy leather seats and a rustic, wooden interior like the kind I love when I work in Caffè Nero coffee shops or pay a visit to Grounded.

The Gourmet Hut will soon become one of your favorite restaurants in Whitechapel if you’re a burger lover.

If you’re looking to have breakfast in Whitechapel, yes indeed, that’s a spot to visit. But the item that makes The Gourmet Hut a favorite amongst East Londoners is the fact that they offer a wide range of completely halal burgers.

We’re talking about 18 different burgers all crafted from fresh ingredients and premium meat cuts that follow the signature affordable prices of the Whitechapel restaurants.

That’s one of the restaurants I’d recommend whether you’re looking for something affordable on the go, or if you wish to have a laidback date with your other half.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Sushi Masago

Photo: UberEats

If you’re looking for places to eat halal sushi in Whitechapel, Sushi Masago is the perfect place to do so.

It is an East London favorite, with an extensive menu that offers anything from large sushi boxes at just over £10 to udon and halal ramen.

Almost all the items on the menu barely cost over £10, and that makes Sushi Masago one of the most affordable restaurants in Whitechapel.

This is a completely halal Japanese restaurant that I have been following for quite some time, and the prices of sushi are very much in line with the prices of other Whitechapel restaurants.

However, Sushi Masago is probably the restaurant that offers the biggest selection of sushi, ramen, and bento boxes, and the portions served are very generous.

On the menu, no pork and no alcohol, so if you’re looking for completely halal restaurants in Whitechapel, you’ve hit the jackpot with Sushi Masago.

The restaurant is quite small, and you can indeed dine in, but in case you don’t find a spot, the takeaway is possible and the quality is the same kind of delicious whether you visit the Whitechapel restaurant or get the food delivered.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Efes Restaurant

best restaurants in whitechapel east london - best places to eat in whitechapel - best whitechapel restaurants - breakfast in whitechapel - turkish restaurant in whitechapel - whitechapel restaurants halal - sushi whitechapel - efes restaurant
Photo: UberEats

I love Turkish food; my fiance is Turkish, and I have the occasion to dine at Turkish restaurants in London quite often.

And one of the best restaurants in Whitechapel is actually fully Turkish.

Efes Restaurant is situated a few minutes on foot from both Brick Lane and Aldgate East station, and it seems like the restaurant is always bustling.

How could it not be, when you see a menu filled with some of the most traditional Turkish dishes?

On the menu, traditional lentil soup, Adana kebab and chicken shish, yogurt kebab, and mixed grill platters are some of the best dishes to order at Efes Restaurant.

From the street, you can already see the dishes and the clean, sophisticated interior – and since the menu is completely halal and no alcohol is served, Efes Restaurant is the perfect destination if you’re looking for the best halal restaurants in Whitechapel.

Best Restaurants in Whitechapel: Townsend Restaurant

best restaurants in whitechapel east london - best places to eat in whitechapel - best whitechapel restaurants - breakfast in whitechapel - turkish restaurant in whitechapel - whitechapel restaurants halal - sushi whitechapel - townsend restaurant
Photo: SquareMeal

Townsend Restaurant is probably one of the fanciest restaurants in Whitechapel, and, located in the Whitechapel Gallery, it offers tasty Modern European food.

I’ve been clearly in love with Modern European restaurants since my visit to Heritage Soho; before that, I was mainly eating all times of ethnic cuisines but European – because I’m French and wanted to try things I really didn’t know.

If you’re looking for the best restaurants in Whitechapel for a romantic date, Townsend Restaurant might be on the pricier side (count about £40 per head for à la carte), but the weekday lunch set menu is priced at £24 for three courses and is actually tremendous value.

On the Townsend Restaurant menu, some British and European favorites remastered by the Whitechapel restaurant; bread and whipped Glastonbury butter, breaded pollock with tartare sauce, and other Red Leicester croquettes with pickled walnut ketchup.

Some real classics crafted from seasonal and local ingredients, make the Townsend Restaurant menu a must-try.

Best Restaurants near Whitechapel: Pizza Union Aldgate

best restaurants in whitechapel east london - best places to eat in whitechapel - best whitechapel restaurants - breakfast in whitechapel - turkish restaurant in whitechapel - whitechapel restaurants halal - sushi whitechapel - pizza union aldgate
Photo: TripAdvisor

Pizza Union offers the cheapest pizza in London, and that’s a fact.

I love finding cheap eats in Rome, and I love finding the same kind of cheap eats in London – and since Pizza Union offers woodfired Roman-style pizza, crispy and hot, what else could we wish for, really?

Since Pizza Union is located in Aldgate, you’ll need to walk for a few minutes to reach it – and honestly, it deserves the walk.

Pizza Union is one of the most famous Italian restaurants in London (aside from some of the ones at London Bridge) for really cheap pizza.

We’re talking about a £5 Margherita here, a huge, good, cheesy pizza that will fill you up real nice.

Obviously, with such prices, the Pizza Union restaurants are always packed.

It’s not only the restaurant near Whitechapel but also the one near King’s Cross – and you’ll understand why as soon as you bite into your Margherita.

Opening hours are 11 am to 11 pm, perfect if you’re looking for Whitechapel restaurants open till late.
