Rome is at its prettiest during the warm season; from March to May, the Eternal City’s flower-clad streets bathe in the sun, with contrasting shapes on the colorful buildings.
Whether you are living here or traveling to spend your first spring in Rome, these are some of the city’s most beautiful places – including, of course, some incredible hidden gems you’ve never seen anywhere else.
In this guide, you will find lots of very secret Roman places: gorgeous gardens and parks, beautiful villas to enjoy views of the city, and many more spots to add to your bucket list!
Spring in Rome: The Must-Visit Places For Your Bucket List

If you’ve been here before, you know I love finding free places to visit whether I’m living in London, Rome, Barcelona, Paris or even, just last year, Istanbul.
Those of you planning a trip to Rome on a budget will find plenty of free museums here, as well as completely free-to-visit hidden gems – a really complete guide to places that turn incredibly gorgeous as the days get warmer.
What’s the Weather Like During Spring in Rome?

Around the end of March, the temperatures in Rome already start rising; it’s not unusual to have 20-degree-celsius days.
At the time of writing, we are mid-April, and we are already seeing days at 27 to 29 degrees Celsius, which is perfect if you’re planning to travel to beautiful beaches near Rome around that time of the year.
What to Pack to Visit Rome During the Spring?

Depending on how long you travel to Rome during the spring (I’m thinking April/May), you can already start packing your suitcase to be way lighter than you would for a trip during February, or even the beginning of March.
In your suitcase, you should mostly have light sweatshirts, T-shirts, as well as light jackets as the evenings are still a bit chilly.
In terms of shoes, since the Roman pavements are quite large, I always recommend a good, comfortable pair of sneakers.
If you want to wear high heels or stilettos, you might want to Uber to the spots you’re going to be spending time in – like elegant rooftop restaurants or other such romantic places.
All in all, and since the weather really starts to get warm during April and May to become frankly unbearable during summer in Rome, take your comfy clothes and sneakers with you.

Pretty Neighborhoods to Visit During Spring in Rome
Let’s start by visiting together some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Rome; from street art to gorgeous buildings, these look otherworldly as soon as the weather gets warmer.
How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Garbatella Neighborhood

The beautiful Garbatella neighborhood is located only a few metro stops away from the Termini Station, and one I lived in for a few months – if you’re looking for floral spots in Rome during spring time, that’s the one.
The Garbatella street art is also very interesting, at times cartoonish, at times poetic, often controversial, and a must-see when you’re walking around in addition to the secret courtyards dotted around the area.

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Pigneto Neighborhood

Seeing street art in the Pigneto neighborhood is one of the main reasons I come here – aside from the fact I am, at the time of writing, living in Torpignattara, about 25 minutes away on foot.
The coffee shops, the street food spots (especially the pizza al taglio places) and other floral and art-covered streets make the Pigneto district a great spot to visit during spring in Rome.

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Testaccio Neighborhood

The Testaccio neighborhood clearly offers an edgy vibe, what with all its street art pieces (Via delle Conce is a must-visit spot), its food market and the Mattatoio, a former slaughterhouse which makes for a perfect photo spot.
The Gasometro is another off the beaten path landmark of Rome, and the street below, open on one side with the Tiber River, is covered with graffiti and colorful street art pieces.
If you have the time to walk around Testaccio, you will find there quite a few very secret places to visit:
- Rome is More, one of Rome’s most unique shops
- Testaccino, a perfect study cafe with delicious fruit juice, strong coffee and perfect sandwiches
- The Fountain of the Amphoras, one of Rome’s most beautiful fountains

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Monti Neighborhood

Another one of the prettiest neighborhoods to visit during spring in Rome is the Monti neighborhood, which is quite close to the Colosseum and the Parco Archeologico del Celio.
From the golden plaques on the ground commemorating the lives of people deported during the WWII to the flower-clad and very colorful buildings, Monti is one place you shouldn’t miss.
And while the Mercato Monti, which used to be one of the coolest markets in Rome, is now closed, you will find plenty of cute restaurants in Monti, with proper Roman specialties.

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Trastevere Neighborhood

There are many, many amazing things to do in Trastevere, from the gorgeous restaurants to the small vicoli, colorful winding alleys dotted around the neighborhood.
You’ll find more tiny alleys in Trastevere than in any of the other areas in town, and who knows, maybe come across a hidden church you didn’t know about?
One thing’s for sure; you have to visit both the gorgeous Galleria Corsini and the neighboring Orto Botanico, Rome’s picturesque botanical garden when you’re visiting Trastevere.

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Quartiere Coppedè

With its eclectic mix of architectural styles, which encompass Art Nouveau, Art Deco and medieval architecture, the Quartiere Coppedè clearly is one of the most magical places in Rome – and one perfect to discover during the spring!
The Quartiere Coppedè is one of Rome’s most instagrammable places, and one rich in history and details.
The Fontana delle Rane, the Fountain of the Frogs, is an utterly beautiful fountain, and one I have spent many minutes observing – the splashing water, the eroded sculptures, everything about it feels wonderful.

How to Spend Spring in Rome: Visit the Torpignattara Neighborhood

The Torpignattara neighborhood, where I currently live, is known for its bustling community, and offers many cool coffee shops, restaurants, and street art pieces.
The street art in Torpignattara is actually one of the things that makes the area worth visiting, as you will find many murals in the streets along the Via di Torpignattara.
If one of the things you want to do during spring in Rome is finding new hidden gems, Torpignattara is a great place to check out.
And if you get hungry, the Fatti di Farina coffee shop on Via Galeazzo Alessi preps some of the best breakfast in Rome, from instagrammable pistachio croissants to gorgeously light maritozzi.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Via del Trullo

Via del Trullo is located on the outskirts of the city, and it should definitely be part of any street-art based itinerary for the day.
The street art at Via del Trullo is perfect to check out during a spring day, as it’s not too hot yet, and you will have enough sun to snap shots of the murals and smaller street art pieces scattered around the neighborhood.
And if you would like to find even more secret places to visit, pop by Via della Columella to admire a huge mural that blends car parts and Roman symbols.

Beautiful Gardens and Villas to Visit During Spring in Rome
Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Villa Pamphili

Located in the west of Rome, Villa Doria Pamphili is undeniably one of the most beautiful villas in Rome (villa in the Italian sense, which means the main building and the park surrounding it).
This is one of the very places where you’ll find lots of beautiful Roman statues, in addition to ponds, lakes, and even ruins.
Its location close to Villa Sciarra means you would do well to visit both in the same day, as both offer a different vibe.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Villa Borghese

One of Rome’s most famous landmarks, Villa Borghese is dotted with hidden gems, from the Orologio del Pincio, which works with water, to quite secret museums you can visit for free.
The Museo di Pietro Canonica is one of the museums I’m thinking of as I am writing, as the many sculptures there really are worth a visit.
Since one of the things you will do during spring in Rome will mostly be enjoying the outdoors (aside from some famous spots if it’s your first time in town), you can hardly do better than Villa Borghese.
The immense park is split into several smaller, magical gardens, and if you allow yourself to get lost, chances are you will come across many beautiful statues, temples, and fountains.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Villa Sciarra

While Villa Borghese and Villa Doria Pamphili undeniably offer some of the most beautiful sculptures in Rome, one place you shouldn’t miss, and one of my favorite in the city, is the incredible Villa Sciarra.
Located up high, this gorgeous garden offers some of the best free views of Rome, in addition to pergolas, fountains, and statues of mythological characters.
It’s a wonder to visit Villa Sciarra during the spring, and also a very inspiring place to write in Rome if you want to take some time to reflect while enjoying views of the Altare della Patria.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Orto Botanico, Trastevere

If you’re traveling to Rome on a budget but would still like to discover one of the prettiest places to visit during the spring, pop by the Orto Botanico.
It’s one of the only spots to admire cherry blossom in Rome, and with its small Japanese garden, its fountains, statues, rose garden, and even a bamboo forest, the Orto Botanico is a must-visit.
The best part?
It only costs 5 euros to enter, and perfect to visit with kids!

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Giardino degli Aranci

The Giardino degli Aranci (Garden of the Oranges) is one of the quietest places in Rome; one perfect to read, write, or catch up with friends while enjoying views of the Altare della Patria.
The panorama in this garden is wide, open, and gorgeous at spring time.
The Aventino neighborhood, which surrounds the Giardino degli Aranci, is filled with hidden gems and beautiful churches you have to visit at some point:
- The hidden cloister at the Church of Sant’Anselmo all’Aventino
- The Basilica di Santa Maria all’Aventino, right outside of the garden
- The Basilica dei Santi Bonifacio e Alessio, with its hidden crypt and Cosmatesque-style floors
For those looking for free things to do in Rome off the beaten path, all three of these gorgeous basilicas and churches are worth a visit, before making your way to the also free Rose Garden at Circo Massimo.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Laghetto dell’EUR

The Passeggiata del Giappone, one of Rome’s cherry blossom spots, is one of the prettiest places to visit during spring in Rome.
In addition to the gorgeous cherry tree-lined alley, the Laghetto dell’EUR, an artificial lake in the EUR neighborhood, is one of the natural spots I love most in the Eternal City.
Waterfalls and fountains complete the picturesque landscape, and when you are done visiting the Laghetto dell’EUR and enjoying the cherry blossom in March/April, a mere 20-minute walk will take you to the incredible Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Museo Venanzo Crocetti Garden

Dedicated to the renowned Italian sculptor Venanzo Crocetti, the very secret Museo di Venanzo Crocetti offers insight into the artist’s life.
While the museum is not located in the center of the city, it is completely free, and the sculptures, made of bronze and marble, are simply breathtaking.
The plus side?
If you are looking for secret gardens in Rome, the small garden at the back of the Museo di Venanzo Crocetti is one of the most manicured you’ll find in town.

Beautiful Villas and Gardens in Rome: Piazzale del Faro al Gianicolo

The Gianicolo viewpoint is one of the most famous in Rome, and if you would like to catch beautiful views of the city, Piazzale del Faro is one of my favorite spots to do so.
This is an especially amazing place to visit in Rome at night, as the whole city lights up.
And if you decide to pop by during the day, you will also be able to admire the bust sculptures scattered around Piazzale del Faro.

Beautiful Gardens in Rome: Cimitero del Verano

Not a garden per se, as it is so big, the Cimitero del Verano (Verano Cemetery) is one of the most famous cemeteries in Rome, and the final resting place of many a prominent figure.
From ornate mausoleums to sculpture-decorated tombstones, the Cimitero del Verano makes for a quiet place to visit to reflect on your thoughts.
Fun fact; the tomb of Garibaldi is located in this cemetery, not too far from the main entrance.
And once you are done visiting, why not make your way to the San Lorenzo neighborhood, close by?
It’s one of the neighborhoods where you will find many coffee shops, street food spots and street art – a must-visit too, when you’re visiting Rome during the spring!

Beautiful Gardens in Rome: Cimitero Acattolico, Piramide

Another one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Rome, the Cimitero Acattolico (Non-Catholic cemetery) offers a straight view on the breathtaking Pyramid of Cestius.
English Poet John Keats, notably, is buried there, along with other figures from the arts in the smaller part of the Cimitero Acattolico, in a spacious garden on your left when you enter the cemetery.
Established in the 18th century, the Cimitero Acattolico is also home to many, many cats, and during spring in Rome, it is one of the places you will see colorful flowers in full bloom.

Beautiful Museums To Visit During Spring in Rome
If you would like to add some of Rome’s best museums to your spring bucket list, here are a few I am fond of – some of them are among the most secret places in town, and definite must-visits!
Beautiful Museums in Rome: Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove, Metropoliz

First up, the Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove in the Città di Metropoliz, away from the city center, is a huge open-air museum covered with street art pieces from the ground to the ceiling.
The Museo dell’Altro e dell’Altrove, also called MAAM Museum, is a secret museum you can only visit on Saturdays, since it is located in an old slaughterhouse where people now live.
It costs only 5 euros to enter, and you can easily spend hours admiring ever corner of the museum – it is even more striking when it is spring in Rome, with the sun shining bright on the art pieces in the outdoor areas.

Beautiful Museums in Rome: Il Miglio d’Arte, Torraccia

Also located on the outskirts of the city, Il Miglio d’Arte in Torraccia is a great spot to visit in Rome with kids when the warm days are back.
Ninety murals line a quiet cycling path, and make for a colorful, and very secret spot to visit if you’re looking for hidden gems and feel like you’ve already seen it all.

Beautiful Museums in Rome: Palazzo Altemps

The Renaissance palace Palazzo Altemps, built in the 15th century, is quite easy to access from Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori, and an incredible place to enjoy beautiful ceilings in Rome.
When the days get sunnier, the colors look richer, brighter, making Palazzo Altemps a great photo spot.
One wouldn’t imagine there is a secret courtyard so close to Piazza Navona, and with the grand arches and statues all around the courtyard, you could easily spend an hour there just reflecting on life.

Beautiful Museums in Rome: Serra Moresca and Casina delle Civette, Villa Torlonia

Even if you’re only planning to spend one day in Rome, a visit to Villa Torlonia is one of the best things you could treat yourself to.
Why?
Because there are many hidden gems in Villa Torlonia, and I’m not only talking about its museums, which include the Palazzo Nobile (gorgeous ceilings there!) and the Serra Moresca.
The Moorish greenhouse is one of the prettiest places to visit during spring in Rome, as the light plays on the stained glass, making the exotic plants appear even more beautiful.
For those looking for beautiful ruins in Rome, you will also find at the back of Villa Torlonia a few temple ruins, as well as broken columns, which you wouldn’t expect when visiting such a manicured garden.
PS. The Casina delle Civette (House of the Owls) inside the villa is another must-visit spot – the fairytale house is indeed as gorgeous inside as it is breathtaking outside!

Beautiful Museums in Rome: Museo Giovanni Barracco and Its Terrace

The Museo Giovanni Barracco, in the center of Rome, is one of my favorite free museums to visit as it offers anything you might wish for.
A secret crypt? Check.
Gorgeous Roman, Egyptian, and medieval artifacts? Also check.
But what I love most about this museum, located a few minutes away from Via del Corso (the perfect shopping spot in Rome!), is its terrace.
For a couple of minutes, you can enjoy life passing by at street level, the famously infamous Roman traffic, and tourists walking to their next destination.

Beautiful Museums in Rome: Museo Condominiale di Tor Marancia

The Museo Condominiale di Tor Marancia is, like Il Miglio d’Arte and part of the MAAM Museum, an open-air museum, and completely free to visit.
The first time I ever visited the Tor Marancia neighborhood and its murals was actually during spring, and on a warm day, discovering the 22 street art pieces feels especially right.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, EUR

Let’s move on to some other gorgeous places to visit during spring in Rome, and let’s start with the Palazzo della Civiltà, also called the Colosseo Quadrato.
Located close to the Laghetto dell’EUR, the Palazzo della Civiltà is an architectural wonder, and one you can only visit on the outside – all around the building are located gorgeous statues awaiting our curious eye.
The Palazzo della Civiltà houses the Fendi headquarters, and if you’re lucky enough, you might be able to attend exhibitions there during your trip to Rome!

Beautiful Places to Visit in Rome: Campidoglio with View of the Vittoriano

The Campidoglio, right in front of the Musei Capitolini, is a great spot to visit to catch views of the Vittoriano (Altare della Patria) on one side, and the Fori Imperiali on the other.
Many beautiful statues are scattered around the Campidoglio, and the ground is also worth a glance and a picture.
When you are done enjoying the views of Rome, visit the Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli – this is one of the most beautiful churches in Rome, an unmissable gem of religion, color and architecture.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Stadio dei Marmi

In the Foro Italico, the Stadio dei Marmi makes for one of the most unusual places to add to your bucket list – this olympic stadium is indeed adorned with dozens of immaculate white statues.
These huge statues, which represent different sports, make for the perfect background if you are looking for secret photo spots in Rome.
There is at least another stadium nearby with such sculptures around it, but in my experience, it is not possible to visit it as easily as the Stadio dei Marmi, which is anyway larger, with more statues to enjoy.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Palazzetto Zuccari

One of the most beautiful buildings in Rome, Palazzetto Zuccari is located a stone’s throw away from the Piazza di Spagna stairs, and a cute place to add to your itinerary.
Needless to say, with the monster faces sculpted around the door and two windows, Palazzetto Zuccari makes for a definitely instagrammable place.
A great spot to visit with teens and kids, or even during a solo trip to Rome, before visiting the Chiesa della Trinità dei Monti at the top of Piazza di Spagna.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Basilica di San Pietro and Ponte Sant’Angelo

The Ponte Sant’Angelo, which leads to the Sant’Angelo Castle, is another place I love to hang around when it’s spring in Rome and the light is good enough for incredible pictures.
Unfortunately, this is also one of the most famous bridges in Rome, which means many people use it in pictures – it can get quite crowded!
Still, if you have the time and would like to check out some of Rome’s landmarks, the Ponte Sant’Angelo is a beautiful one to check out before walking to the nearby Basilica di San Pietro.

Best Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Porta Portese Flea Market, Trastevere

The Porta Portese Flea Market in Trastevere is one of the most unique places to go shopping in Rome, and the only thing I would recommend is avoiding it at all costs during the summer.
Spending the summer in Rome is something of a nightmare, really, as it gets really hot, which makes visiting the city quite difficult, unless you want to find natural places like the Laghetto dell’EUR.
For clothes retailing for as low as 50 cents, the Porta Portese market is a must-visit, as you can find all types of brands, including H&M, Mango and Bershka.
I’ve found many vintage clothes at the Porta Portese market, almost brand new, and you’ll also find antiques there, used books, accessories, and the odd street food truck.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Campo de’ Fiori

TabaCafe in Campo de’ Fiori is one of my personal favorite places to have breakfast in Rome, as well as an analcoholic drink at the end of the afternoon.
If you’re looking to enjoy spring in Rome, a walk around Campo de’ Fiori before your drink or your late-night bite is oh so very necessary.
Let’s not forget we’re in one of the most famous markets in Rome, and you will find there more than one flower shop, whose colors contrast with the yellow and burnt orange buildings around the square.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Parco del Colosseo

As I am way more interested in finding secret places in Rome rather than famous landmarks, I don’t usually spend much time around the Colosseo, but it’s still an attraction you should check out at least once.
It is way better to visit the Colosseo during spring in Rome than during the summer, as the crowds literally make it unbearable to walk around the monument ruins.
If you would also like to add another stop to your itinerary, you will find the secret Parco Archeologico del Celio a few minutes on foot away from the Colosseo.
The Celio neighborhood is another beautiful place to visit to find ruins, secret churches and wild nature – and so close it would be a shame to miss it.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo is located at the end of Via del Corso, close to the Flaminio neighborhood, and from this famous square, you can easily reach the Pincio at Villa Borghese as well.
During the spring, pop by the fountain at the center of Piazza del Popolo to rest for a bit and decide where you want to go next.
This fountain is one of the most beautiful in the city, with an obelisk at the center, and lions that will remind you of the fountain in London’s Trafalgar Square.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Arco degli Acetari

Close to the bustling Campo de’ Fiori, the Arco degli Acetari (Arch of Acetari) is one of Rome’s most instagrammable places, a secluded, quiet and colorful courtyard.
The Arco degli Acetari, which dates back to the 16th century, is a great example of what gorgeous villages around Rome look like, with tight thresholds, tiny staircases and brightly colored buildings – a true Roman symbol!

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Chiostro di San Giovanni in Laterano

Another perfect place to find beautiful nature during spring in Rome is the secret cloister at the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, in the San Giovanni neighborhood.
To access it, enter the gorgeous basilica and make your way to the end – on the left, you will be asked for a 4 euro entry fee (payable by cash or card), giving way to one of Rome’s most beautiful places.
The 13th century cloister is notably perfect if you would like to find places with Cosmatesque art in Rome, since many of the columns surrounding the Chiostro di San Giovanni in Laterano are covered with Cosmatesque mosaics.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Chiostro di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva

Near the Pantheon, the Chiostro di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva is adjacent to the basilica that bears the same name, and another one of the secret cloisters in Rome that dates back to the 13th century.
Rome indeed still bears many traces of its medieval history, and at the Chiostro di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, the ornate ceilings and small, secret garden dotted with orange trees are a must-see.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Chiostro di San Cosimato, Trastevere

In the picturesque Trastevere neighborhood, where you will find many delicious pasta and pizza restaurants, the Chiostro di San Cosimato makes for a really hidden gem, accessible only by passing the neighboring hospital’s gate.
The tiny church of San Cosimato, tucked away in the back, is probably one of the most secret churches in Rome, and a walk in the surrounding cloisters (there are two, back to back – don’t miss the second one!) makes for a perfect spring activity.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Fountain at Piazza della Reppublica

Piazza della Reppublica, a few minutes from the Termini station, is another one of the prettiest places in Rome, and one where the central fountain is a wonderful gem to admire.
Whether it is sunny out or night time, people come to take pictures in front of this fountain – but most do not know that the arches surrounding Piazza della Reppublica are another gorgeous photo spot.
The Terme di Diocleziano and the Palazzo Massimo are two must-visit museums located close to the fountain, and perfect to add to your itinerary whether it’s the high season or winter.

Beautiful Places to Visit During Spring in Rome: Double Wide Bar Cafe Terrace, Torpignattara

I thought I would add a couple of coffee shops in this guide, which you need to visit if it’s your first time in Rome – let’s start with the Double Wide Bar cafe in Torpignattara.
At first glance, there’s nothing extremely particular about the Double Wide Bar cafe, which offers seats inside as well as four tables in front of the coffee shop.
However, this is one of the places where you’ll find the best pistachio croissants in Rome, along with great ginseng caffè, an Italian specialty I am very fond of.

Way more famous than, say, the Chiostro di San Cosimato, the Chiostro del Bramante, in the heart of Rome, is a gorgeous Renaissance cloister you have to visit at some point.
The Chiostro del Bramante often offers free exhibitions which surround the courtyard, and if you would like to find floral spots in Rome, do visit their ultra instagrammable coffee shop.
Filled with bright lemon trees and floral patterns, the Chiostro del Bramante cafe is a great place to come and catch up with friends, or journal for a bit.
