If you’re ever looking for the best cafes to work in Lower Manhattan, you’re going to find lots of cute cafes, from rustic and wooden decor to some of the most laptop friendly cafes in Manhattan NYC.

I’ve written quite a few posts about cafes to do work in Lower Manhattan, with some of the best laptop friendly cafes in East Village.

You’ve also been able to discover work cafes in Astoria and Queens a few weeks ago, and if you’re ever around the Upper East Side, there are also plenty of coffee shops to study there.

But today, we’ll talk specifically about Lower Manhattan’s best work cafes. That means you’ll see some familiar study spaces I’ve mentioned on The Working Line before – it only means they’re that good!

And if you’d like to learn more about places to work around the world, check out the following guides:

15 Best Cafes to Work in Lower Manhattan (Laptop Friendly)

Lower Manhattan is more hip, and trendier than the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side where you’d usually pay much more for a latte and a spot with free WiFi and power outlets.

It’s also literally right across the Brooklyn Bridge, which means it’s much more easily accessible on a daily basis if you want to commute from Brooklyn to Lower Manhattan and Midtown.

In this guide, as usual, you’ll find some of the best laptop friendly cafes in NYC with power plugs and free WiFi. Where possible, I’ll mention how long you can stay there before feeling like you’re disturbing the vibe.

Obviously, the best thing to do is always to try out those spots and see which one is your new favorite cafe to study in Lower Manhattan!

We’re starting with Baxter St Cafe, which is one of the coziest cafes to work in Lower Manhattan. You have a nice collection of photobooks there, and a few seats which are perfect to really feel at home and be productive with work at the same time.

Not the biggest for sure, however, since Baxter Cafe has a built-in gallery, it’s really an amazing coffee shop to work for some time.

It’s open from 8 am to 3 pm most days of the week (closed on Sundays), so if you want to bring a good book and your notes, it’s that kind of chill spot to get some work done.

You’ve got great coffee and fresh pastries, but that’s not why you’ll want to pay a visit to Black Cat Coffee. For starters, it’s open from 7 am to 10 pm most days of the week – if you’re in NYC, you know that most of the study cafes close super early, around 5 to 7 pm.

In this large coffee shop with free WiFi and power outlets scattered around you, you’re able to work on your laptop and really chill if you’re taking a day off.

The Rivington Street cafe is one of the staples on the Lower East Side, and offers books, board games, and some of the most comfortable armchairs you’ve ever tried.

Best Cafes to Work in Lower Manhattan NYC: Kaigo Coffee Room

If you’re around Chinatown, you’ll want to try Kaigo Coffee Room. It’s actually located between Chinatown, Soho, and Little Italy, so easily accessible from many parts of Lower Manhattan.

Like Baxter St Cafe, Kaigo Coffee Room is a pretty small cafe to work in Lower Manhattan, but it’s laptop friendly and it offers amazing, amazing drinks.

It opens from 8 am to 4 pm most days of the week (shorter opening times at weekends), so I’d definitely recommend arriving as early as you can.

Kaigo Coffee Room is however pretty quiet at all times of the day, and it offers power outlets and free WiFi – everything a digital nomad, a freelancer or a student might wish for.

Best Cafes to Study in NYC Lower Manhattan: The Granddaddy

The Granddaddy is another one of the very best cafes to work in Lower Manhattan, located very near Grand St station. It opens from 8 am to 7 pm every day of the week, and it’s one of the most famous study cafes in the area.

Why?

Because The Granddaddy allows you to work on your laptop and offers good, free WiFi and plenty of seating space, which you would never decline if you really need to get work done.

Very few power outlets, so come with your laptop charged. However, the communal tables will bring you near other freelancers and students, which should help you work better and faster anyway.

Bluestockings is really different from the other Lower Manhattan cafes I’m mentioning here today, as it’s a big bookshop cafe.

Many more books than seating spots here, but still, if you’re just looking for a laptop friendly cafe to stay for a bit, Bluestockings is a great option. Especially since it has free WiFi and allows you to work.

The bookshop organizes events and workshops and strongly supports the LGBTQ+ community. Not only with books, but in all areas of life.

It’s open from 11 am to 7 pm, so if you tend to wake up late, that’s a perfect place to head to to get some work done in a booklover-friendly den.

Lots of students and freelancers come to Froth NYC with their laptops in the hopes of getting some good work done. Since you’ve got power outlets and free WiFi there, you’ll be able to call their comfy sofas your new home.

I love the type of minimalist Scandinavian coffee shop, like the vibe you’ve got at Ole and Steen, and well, if you’re the same, you’re going to love Kaffe Landskap.

This is a decently-sized coffee shop that opens from 6.30 am to 7 pm on weekdays, so you really have plenty of time to study and work on your laptop.

You’ve got only a few power plugs here and there, but the coffee at Kaffe Landskap is great, and so is the food.

You’ll find yourself probably more comfortable working in less ‘minimalist’ coffee shops, but if you’re after the best cafes to work in Lower Manhattan, the large communal tables at Kaffe Landskap really make for a digital nomad’s paradise.

Now or Never Coffee on Grand St seems to be one of the most instagrammable cafes in Manhattan, if I may say so. However, we’re here to talk about laptop friendly cafes, and Now or Never Coffee really ticks that box.

You’ve got power outlets in the entire coffee shop as well as free WiFi, and while Now or Never Coffee is not the biggest cafe (not like The Granddaddy, that’s for sure!), it’s known for its workshops and for being a cool background if you need to host a meeting.

Really comfortable seats, and friendly staff who serves some of the best coffee in Lower Manhattan? Yes, please! However, it’s open from 8 am to 5 pm – come early if you want to have a full work day under your belt.
