The Gello ice cream shop on Via Palestro, near Termini Station in Rome, not only has a funny name but an exceptional way of making the world-famous Italian gelato.

I’ve talked about some of the best ice cream shops in Rome in a couple of posts some time ago, and since I was given to try the Gello gelato again a few weeks ago, I thought a quick review of the spot was in order.

When you’re looking for some cheap eats in Rome, ice cream is a good way to calm your stomach down while you reach the next magical park or stunning church.

There are lots of amazing pizza and pasta spots in Trastevere and such trendy neighborhoods.

Yet, even near Termini, arguably a shady spot (like all central stations in the world), you will find great spots to eat at!

The Gello gelateria is located on Via Palestro, just a few meters from the YellowSquare, one of the best hostels in Rome, and one I lived at for five months when I first moved to Rome.

If you’re also ever looking for digital nomad accommodation in Rome precisely to be able to work, you couldn’t wish for a better spot than the YellowSquare.

A few months after I moved to Rome the first time, the Yellow opened the Gello Gelateria, which is open every day of the week but Sundays.

The shop is tiny, and there are no spots to sit and enjoy your ice cream, but that’s also what helps keep the prices down.

Even in Rome, prices have increased, and even in places where you could usually have a very cheap breakfast, you now have to cash out more.

Still one of the cheapest – and best digital nomad cities in Europe, if you ask me.

At the Gello Termini, two flavors retail for 3 euros, and from what I understood, panna (artisanal whipped cream) is free here, as in many of the gelaterie in Rome.

At the Gello ice cream shop, you have many different flavors, but not so many that you start wondering if they are really handmade.

Lots of fruity ice creams, from melon to banana, coconut and such.

Lots of really mouthwatering flavors like toasted hazelnut and pistachio, which are traditionally two of the best ice cream flavors in Italy.

Chocolate, stracciatella, passion fruit,… You really have it all at the Gello.

When I visited the Gello, I didn’t feel like taking my usual hazelnut and pistachio combo, and felt like ordering a sorbet, something I don’t usually do as I like milk-based ice cream.

This time, I went with a friend who ordered, if I’m not mistaken, a mix of Lotus Biscoff ice cream and hazelnut – both incredible.

But I have to admit that my choice suited the moment far better, with delicate, tasty banana and lemon scoops.

Whether fruit-based or not, the Gello gelateria achieves ultimate creaminess in all their flavors.

Two other flavors to try there are the Amarena ice cream, a mix of cream and cherries, and stracciatella – one of the creamiest, most decadent ice creams you’ll be given to try in Rome.

There are still definitely lots of street food spots to try in Rome on a budget, but as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, a great gelato is always the way to go to get that sugar kick.

The Gello gelateria is still one of the most underrated ice cream shops in Rome, located close to incredible skincare and makeup shops like Bottega Verde at Termini Station, and beautiful museums.

As such, it’s a must-visit if you’re traveling to Rome, whether it be the first or tenth time!

Until next time!
