A local’s review of Grounded in Bow, East London – a beautiful rustic coffee shop with completely halal Full English breakfast, delicious cakes and chai latte!

I’m really excited to finally write my full review of Grounded Coffee Company, aka Grounded in Bow, East London after Mile End station (where you’ll find the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park and the secret Ackroyd Drive Greenlink).

I can’t remember exactly how many times I’ve mentioned this coffee shop in passing, and this review is long overdue – I’ve had it planned for months now.

Finding a delicious halal Full English breakfast in London might be easier than it was a few years ago, but ever since I first moved to London back in 2019, I’ve never found one as good as that of Grounded.

I love coming across new rustic coffee shops in London – the first Grounded cafe I ever visited, though, was the one in Aldgate, only minutes from the strange Earthing sculpture and Minories.

It’s only about a year ago that I found that Grounded had opened a cafe in Bow, after Mile End on the Central Line.

When I stepped inside, I was welcomed by a rustic slash industrial atmosphere, quite cozy, and was also happy to see that there were many seats with power outlets.

If you’re ever looking for cafes to work in London, outside of peak hours is best, as you can easily find a seat close to the wall – the Aldgate cafe is pretty small, and the Bow branch feels huge in comparison.

On the menu, you’ll find anything from vegan cakes to halal brunch plates, cookies, croissants, brownies, and all kinds of goodness.

Add to it colorful lattes, and you’ve got what certainly is one of the best cafes in the whole of London.

I visited Grounded in Bow with a friend and we shared a little bit of everything, starting with a melt-in-your-mouth pecan brownie and a steaming cup of chai latte.

Now, chai latte is one of my favorite drinks to have when I live in London – when I live in other cities like Rome, it’s harder to find and I gulp down as many as I can when in the UK.

When it comes to the pecan brownie, it felt dense, melty and chewy all rolled into one, with enough sweetness to balance the chocolate: delicious is the word.

My friend chose a vegetarian breakfast on the morning we visited – we’d been eating quite heavy, from Italian Bear Chocolate to Poppies Fish and Chips, and she felt like having something light.

Egg, salmon and crushed avocado dressed her toast, with a little salad on the side; fresh indeed.

Now, every single time I pop by a Grounded cafe, I need to have my Full English breakfast.

I ordered my eggs sunny side up and enjoyed them runny on my sourdough toast, topped with tomato beans and a couple of mushrooms to top it all.

I cannot stress enough how delicious the beef sausages and turkey bacon are at Grounded; perfectly crispy, tasty, and great to balance the sweetness of the beans.

Hash browns are one of my favorite things in my Full English (I usually order a second or a third, as well as more bacon and sausage), and again, those at Grounded are especially flavorful, and perfectly crispy.

Not only is a visit to Grounded perfect for architecture lovers (it’s established in a former bank) with its pillars and art deco touches, it’s also one of the best breakfast spots in East London.

It looks like a vintage cafe, with quality dishes and affordable prices considering the taste, and makes for a great spot for a chat with friends, or a moment spent writing or enjoying your own company.
