A local’s photo gallery of a strange London Sculpture in the City art piece; Earthing by Jocelyn McGregor on Aldgate Square – a quirky sight in the city!
If London’s one of my very favorite cities in the world, it’s because you can come across secret sights, from hidden gardens to sculptures, at seemingly every corner.
As I was walking down from Aldgate East towards Minories and Tower Bridge one day, I stumbled upon this strange sculpture mimicking snail shells, fingers and legs – Earthing, by Jocelyn McGregor.
London’s Secret Sculptures: Earthing by Jocelyn McGregor
Created in 2022, Earthing is made of stone, bronze, steel and painted Jesmonite – it’s a sculpture you can touch.
As per the Sculpture in the City website, it ‘acts like a fantastical magnifying glass to explore interconnections between the synthetic and organic worlds in urban spaces, with the human body as the conduit between the two.
The title references activities that reconnect you with the earth, and the form and materials are inspired by a crumbling mountain-top dry-stone shelter inhabited by imagined animal/human hybrids.’
To be fair, there are quite a few other must-see sculptures in London.
Still, Sculpture in the City is one of the art trails you shouldn’t miss, like the Leicester Square Movie Sculpture trail, the London Bridge, and the Broadgate Circle art trail closer to Liverpool Street.

These photos of the Earthing sculpture will hopefully have given you the will to see it with your own eyes.
It’s a really quirky sight, of the kind you only stumble upon when taking the time to really tread London.
Close to this sculpture is Whitechapel’s Grounded, a rustic coffee shop with wonderful halal English breakfast, and Dulce Coffee only steps away is another great option for delicious pancakes, breakie, bagels and Red Velvet cake.
