I always remember that I was born and raised in Troyes, France, which is a medieval city full of old colorful buildings and chunky cobblestone roads.
Today, we are focusing on some beautiful mews in London, found in posh areas like Chelsea and Mayfair, as well as more hidden neighborhoods like Marylebone and Fitzrovia.
Whether you are spending just one day in London or ten, you will find some great instagrammable spots here to add to your bucket list.

In this guide, we are looking at the cobbled streets that give certain London neighborhoods a village feel.
These areas feature low-rise buildings in bright or pastel colors and offer some incredible views.
We will visit the famous St Lukes Mews in Notting Hill, but also Shad Thames in the maritime district of Bermondsey, right by Tower Bridge.
Most of these London mews are Victorian sites created to handle the city’s population boom centuries ago.
They have been kept exactly as they were, offering a quiet village atmosphere and a break from the hustle and bustle of places like Soho or Oxford Street.
Cobbled Streets in London: Shad Thames, Bermondsey
Let’s start with Shad Thames in Bermondsey, which dates back to the Victorian industrial era.
This was the time when London transitioned from a craft-based economy to a global port power.
Shad Thames is one of the most beautiful streets in London, featuring brick architecture and wrought iron walkways.
These bridges were used to connect the storage warehouses to the loading zones.
The old Victorian warehouses and the cobblestones definitely make Shad Thames a cute spot to visit before Tower Bridge or to discover London Bridge’s hidden gems.
Cobbled Streets in London: Middle Temple
Middle Temple is one of the four ancient Inns of Court where London’s top barristers ply their trade.
It is a stunning site featuring a mix of Medieval, Gothic, Tudor, Victorian, and Neoclassical architecture across its many buildings.
While walking along the cobblestone streets of Middle Temple, you should visit Temple Church as well as Elm Court, Pump Court, and Fountain Court.
These are three of the most secret and peaceful courtyards in all of London.
Once you are done, you can find other beautiful spots to see or photograph at the three other Inns of Court.
Gray’s Inn, Inner Temple, and Lincoln’s Inn are all worth a visit, especially the lovely Lincoln’s Inn Chapel.
Pretty Mews in London: St Luke’s Mews, Notting Hill
St Luke’s Mews is located right off Lancaster Road, one of the colorful streets in Notting Hill, and it is another pretty mews born during the Victorian era.
It is about a fifteen-minute walk from Notting Hill Gate station on the Central Line; the pink and blue houses combined with the greenery make it a super instagrammable spot.
Pretty Mews in London: Devonshire Mews South
Devonshire Mews South is probably one of the lesser-known mews streets in London.
In fact, Devonshire Mews West, North, South, and Devonshire Close are all cobbled streets lined with old mews houses.
This area dates back to the Georgian era, at least regarding the layout of the Marylebone streets which were planned under George II.
You can find many small colorful houses in the Devonshire mews, very close to James Street, a bright road that leads down to the cool shops on Oxford Street.

If you head toward Paddington, one of London’s most luxurious areas, you will find another cobbled mews called Conduit Mews with all its little colorful houses.
This mews was built to serve the grand terrace houses of Westbourne Terrace and is famous for being one of the most vibrant spots in London.
If you want to keep walking after seeing this utterly cute street, the Italian Gardens at Kensington Gardens are only a stone’s throw away.
Pretty Mews in London: Ennismore Gardens Mews
Ennismore Gardens Mews is located in Knightsbridge, the same neighborhood where you will find Harrods, one of the best department stores in London, and the V&A Museum just a few minutes away.
We are looking at a High Victorian style from the late Victorian era; the mews street originally served as stables for the aristocratic residences of Ennismore Gardens.
Prettiest Mews in London: Bathurst Mews
Bathurst Stables is located very close to Hyde Park and Connaught Village. It is the mews that houses the last two functional stables in Central London.
Bathurst Mews is found in Bayswater, a posh neighborhood full of great little restaurants and colorful buildings that look beautiful in the spring and autumn.
This very quiet and picturesque cobbled street is perfect for enjoying a bit of nature within the city.

I love the entire Tottenham Court Road and Warren Street area. It has always been this way; even just walking up Tottenham Court Road makes me happy.
If you are planning on popping by some clothes shops in Central London, a visit to Warren Mews beforehand would be satisfying.
With an entirely black facade, Warren Mews catches the eye before opening up onto super aesthetic buildings from the late Georgian and Victorian eras.
When you are done visiting, walk around the Fitzrovia area to discover its charity shops or visit the Pollock’s Toy Museum for a dose of Victorian nostalgia.
Prettiest Mews in London: Kynance Mews
Kynance Mews is located in the beautiful neighborhood of South Kensington, which we discussed at length in my Paris in London itinerary since so many French people live there.
If you are looking for beautiful photo spots with a spring or autumn theme, you will love Kynance Mews, which historically served the residences of Cornwall Gardens.
The wisteria in the spring and the red Virginia creeper in the autumn make it a very cute place to visit.
It is perfect to pair with a trip to the Natural History Museum, a pastry at Aux Merveilleux de Fred, or a cookie from Ben’s Cookies near the tube station.

Osten Mews is also located in South Kensington and dates back to the mid-19th century during the Victorian era.
You will find climbing ivy on the low facades, original paving, and a historical arch, making it one of the most secret mews in London.
It features the typical cul-de-sac structure designed to isolate the noise and smells of the stables from the adjacent grand avenues.

Queen’s Gate Mews is located close to Gloucester Road station in South Kensington and is linked to the expansion of Albertopolis.
It used to house the horses of dignitaries and the wealthy residents of Queen’s Gate.
Its pastel colors mixed with bare brick embody the beauty and quirkiness of British elegance; in fact, it has served as a filming location for several period movies.

Holland Park Mews is located very close to Holland Park, where you can find two magnificent hidden gardens: the Kyoto Garden and the Dutch Garden.
It is one of the most beautiful mews streets in London, featuring wrought iron outdoor staircases and immaculate color combinations.
This is a Victorian site that is now Grade II listed, with an entrance marked by an imposing Neoclassical arch.
The unique architecture and the nearby gardens make it a perfect spot for a peaceful afternoon walk.
Cobbled Mews in London: Cornwall Mews South, South Kensington
Cornwall Mews South brings us back to South Kensington with its beautiful cream, black, and white buildings.
It is a particularly lovely spot to visit during the spring and autumn seasons.
The three free museums of South Kensington – the V&A with its incredible fashion collection, the Science Museum, and the Natural History Museum – are located very close by.
These are perfect to visit if it starts to rain during your walk!
