A local’s guide to visiting London’s Romeo and Juliet mural on New Inn Broadway in Shoreditch – one of the most beautiful Shakespeare street art pieces!
Lately, I’ve told you about many of London’s hidden gems, with some colorful, some historical, and some a little bit of both.
But while I used to live in nearby Bethnal Green, I haven’t told you much about Shoreditch, except that it has some great coffee shops, unique shops, and even a charity bookshop cafe called Paper & Cup.
From street food to concept stores and even neon spots to play golf, you can just about never get bored in this area of the East End.
My favorite spot in Shoreditch, though, is New Inn Broadway, and New Inn Yard nearby – two places filled with colorful street art, from stencils to murals.
New Inn Broadway is where you will find the Romeo and Juliet mural, painted on one entire building; a historical site that blends dream and color.
How to Visit London’s Romeo and Juliet Mural in Shoreditch
That notably includes statues in Southwark Cathedral (and its churchyard), a mural close to the Clink Museum near Borough Market, and a Shakespeare head looking over a pub in beautiful Carnaby Street.
However, none are as breathtaking as the Romeo and Juliet mural, easily accessible from Old Street and Shoreditch High Street stations.
The mural is painted right where the play was first performed, at The Theatre, which was built in 1576 and later demolished – today an office building.
It’s only years later, in 1599, that the timbers that had been part of The Theatre were taken to Southbank near London Bridge to construct the original Globe Theater.
In the 2000s, The Theatre, until now a forgotten place, was rediscovered by Museum of London archaeologists – and a mural was commissioned in 2018, with words from Romeo and Juliet’s Act II:
My bounty is as boundless as the sea My love as deep the more I give to thee The more I have for both are infinite
Right across the mural is also located a sitting statue of Shakespeare on a bench, holding a feather – a cute photo spot since you can sit right next to the statue.
If you’re trying to build you own bookish itinerary in London, you’ll find an almost-similar statue of the playwright in the churchyard of Southwark Cathedral in London Bridge, with yet another Shakespeare sculpture laying inside the cathedral.
