A local’s visit to the beautiful natural reserve of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park in East London – a wonderful Victorian Magnificent Seven Cemetery!

I lived in Mile End, East London for a little under a year the first time I ever moved to London, back in 2019.

Right at the end of my street, I’d take a left on Southern Grove, and there I was, five minutes from home, in the Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

Whether you’re visiting London in autumn and looking for beautiful but creepy places to visit, or during the spring to see blooming nature, this cemetery, part of the Victorian Seven Magnificent cemeteries, is an amazing free spot to see with your own eyes.

The Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park spans a little under 11 hectares (about 27 acres).

In addition to being a beautiful cemetery dotted with Victorian sculptures and tombstones, it’s also a Local Nature Reserve.

The cemetery originally opened in 1841 as the last of the Magnificent Seven Victorian cemeteries, and when it closed to burials in 1966, it was transformed into a public park.

Like all the other Magnificent Seven, the Tower Hamlets Cemetery was founded at a time when city churchyards (like that of the secret Postman’s Park) were overcrowded, calling for large suburban burial grounds.

As you walk around the cemetery, you can literally feel you’re one in the quietest places in London.

Since the cemetery is also a natural reserve, it is a great place to visit in the spring or summer to enjoy some reading or writing on one of the many benches around the park.

History lovers, you’ll enjoy the Grade II-listed monuments, walls and gates – and the contrast of the old Victorian monuments with wildflowers and climbing nature.

I’ve always loved visiting beautiful cemeteries, and London is filled with them.

Whether we’re talking large burial grounds like Tower Hamlets Cemetery or the Highgate Cemetery higher up in North London, I find British cemeteries to be more interesting to visit than the French ones I’ve grown up being used to.

Cemeteries are one of the best places to find sculptures in London.

In smaller churchyards closer to Central London, you often won’t find sculptures, but rather, eerie tombstones scattered here and there around the churches.
