A local’s guide to visiting historical Galerie Vivienne in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris near Palais Royal – a covered passage with beautiful architecture!
A few weeks ago, I started becoming more and more interested in the covered passages of Paris.
I’ve discovered a myriad of them, from Passage Jouffroy to the Passage du Grand Cerf and the open-air Passage Molière, which I mentioned recently.
There are many more that I’ll be sharing photos of soon, but today, we are going to focus on the queen of Parisian passages: Galerie Vivienne.
Galerie Vivienne, The Reine of Covered Parisian Passages
Located in the 2nd arrondissement, it is right near Palais-Royal, the Louvre, and the famous Buren columns.
Galerie Vivienne was the third covered passage to be inaugurated in Paris.
Built in 1823 (right after Passage du Caire and Passage des Panoramas) and listed as a historical monument, it perfectly embodies the luxury and refinement of the Neoclassical era.

It was actually by complete chance that I stumbled upon photos of Galerie Vivienne one day. I didn’t know it at all, even after living in Paris for five years a while back!
Yet, it’s so easy to access – just get off at the Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre metro station and head up Rue de Valois.
Interestingly, you’ll find Place de Valois nearby, which is one of the most famous Emily in Paris locations.
Designed by the architect François-Jean Delannoy, Galerie Vivienne is arguably the most beautiful in Paris because it is such an incredible spot for photos.
You’ll immediately notice the floor mosaics signed by Giandomenico Facchina, featuring geometric patterns in shades of ochre, red, and black.

The gallery is full of amazing symbols; for instance, sculptures of caduceuses, cornucopias, and lyres decorate the arches, symbolizing commerce and success.
The glass roof, made of iron and glass like Passage Jouffroy, lets in a stronger light than the latter, making Galerie Vivienne perfect if you’re looking for places to take photos in Paris.
Inside and around the gallery, you’ll find iconic addresses and beautiful bookstores like the Librairie Jousseaume, founded in 1826 – just three years after the gallery opened.
It is one of the most beautiful spots where you truly feel like time has stood stone.
The Bistrot Vivienne is also worth a visit for a typically Parisian restaurant experience, alongside tea rooms and boutiques that are perfect for lovers of fine food and luxurious moments.

Galerie Vivienne, The Reine of Covered Parisian Passages
Once you’ve finished admiring the decorations of Galerie Vivienne, you’ll find that its location allows you to reach some of the most famous monuments in Paris within minutes.
For example, the Jardin du Palais-Royal is just a short walk away.
Inside, you’ll find two magnificent metallic bubble fountains and several sculptures, as well as the Passage des Deux Pavillons at one of its entrances.
You will also find yourself right in front of the Richelieu site of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
Recently renovated, it is one of the most beautiful libraries in Paris, featuring an Oval Room that is free to enter if you simply wish to visit.
Galerie Colbert is also located just a few minutes away on foot. As the direct neighbor to Galerie Vivienne, it features a spectacular glass rotunda.
You have to enter the National Institute of Art History to access it, and few people realize that, despite this, a visit to Galerie Colbert is completely free.
Other majestic spots like Place des Victoires and Place des Petits Pères are just a few steps from Galerie Vivienne.
Place des Victoires is surrounded by haute couture boutiques and centered around an equestrian statue of Louis XIV.
Although much smaller than Place Vendôme, this royal square remains one of the most beautiful in the city – an incredible place if you want to take architectural photos and immerse yourself in the beauty of Paris.
