A local’s guide to visiting the beautiful Cafe Quai 33 near Gare de Lyon, one of the most beautiful restaurants in Paris with a mosaic on the ceiling!
I really love the Belle Epoque cafes, restaurants, and spots in Paris. Recently, I actually had the chance to visit some of the most beautiful ones in the city.
Among them is the more secret Cafe Quai 33.
This one stands out from historical bouillons like Bouillon Racine or Bouillon Chartier Montparnasse by presenting itself as a modern Parisian brasserie.
Except that, inside Cafe Quai 33, which has a rather unique history, you find an ancient mosaic on the ceiling that really complements the warm atmosphere of the cafe restaurant.

It is quite easy to get to Cafe Quai 33 since it is located on Rue de Lyon, very close to Gare de Lyon in the 12th arrondissement.
You will also find the lovely Rue Traversiere and the colorful Rue Cremieux right near the bright, modern decor offered by Cafe Quai 33.
There is a terrace out front, just like in many Parisian brasseries. You can sit there even in the middle of winter.
Cafe Quai 33 Paris: The Menu and Specialties
I visited Cafe Quai 33 for a simple coffee, which is what I love to do when I walk through Paris to discover hidden gems.
Still, I would definitely go back to try the menu.
You can find all the French bistro classics there; this includes onion soup, eggs with mayo, and even chocolate profiteroles.
Cafe Quai 33 Paris: History and Architecture
Now for the part that interests me most when I visit a beautiful Parisian cafe. I love the architecture, the history, and the decor.
As it turns out, Cafe Quai 33 is nestled in a Haussmann building erected in 1907. Even though the interior has been modernized, it keeps the soul of the great station brasseries.
But what you cannot find on the internet is that Cafe Quai 33 is located on the exact site of a former horse meat butcher shop.
That is why you find hooks, painted golden, used for hanging meat surrounding the historical ceiling mosaic.
I am taking the word of the waiter who shared this info with me. I could not find anything more about the older history of the cafe online.

Once you finish having a drink or maybe lunch at Cafe Quai 33, you can find a myriad of other Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau spots in Paris.
For example, Le Train Bleu is a restaurant inside Gare de Lyon. It is the pinnacle of the Belle Epoque with its gold leaf, sculptures, and monumental paintings.
There is also the magnificent Brasserie Vagenende in Saint Germain des Pres.
You can also visit the stunning Le Cardinal on Boulevard des Italiens or Brasserie Mollard at Saint Lazare.
