Poppies Camden, London's Most Decadent Fish and Chips

A local’s review of Poppies Camden, one of the best fish and chips shops in London, with a stunning marine, vintage decor!

I’ve been going to Poppies ever since I first moved to London in 2019. Honestly, I might have even found it during my very first trip back in 2014.

I ate there for the first time around then, but the photos in this review are actually from an invite I got a few months ago.

I just love vintage spots, themed cafes, and a good plate of fish and chips.

So today, I’m going to give you the full rundown on Poppies. I really like it for the amazing fried fish and that classic British vibe.

The decor is beautiful, and I was served really quickly when I went. I visited around 6:00 or 6:30 PM, so this iconic spot was still pretty quiet.

On the weekends, though, Poppies is usually packed. Locals know it well, and it’s also quite famous on social media.

Poppies was founded in 1952 by Pat “Pop” Newland. He actually started working in the fish industry when he was only 11 years old.

When you walk into Poppies, especially the huge one in Camden Town, you’re stepping into the past.

You’ll see old telephones, vintage jukeboxes, and retro posters as soon as you enter.

I was actually a tourist the first time I went because I’d discovered it online. What I really love there is the fish.

It arrives fresh every day from Billingsgate Market. That’s near Canary Wharf, right by that quirky Traffic Light Tree installation.

The batter is light and just oily enough to be perfectly crispy. I love pairing that with the fresh lemon Poppies puts on the plate.

When I go to a chippy, I always get fries, because what is the dish without them! I also get mushy peas and pickles.

Everything was so filling that I didn’t finish my plate. I still satisfied my sweet tooth with a great apple pie and sticky toffee pudding though.

Once you’re done eating, you’ll probably want to sleep. That was the case for me, so I’m glad I booked for dinner instead of lunch.

I definitely recommend stopping by if you have nothing else planned for the evening. You wouldn’t want to hit a wall while out and about.

Before you eat, why not explore Camden Market? It’s full of old mews turned into unique boutiques and vintage shops.

You can also walk over to Primrose Hill to help you digest. It’s only 15 minutes away, and you can see a beautiful sunset and colorful houses.

If you want to find more unique shops nearby, definitely check out Cyberdog. It’s a total Camden institution.

Even if you aren’t into techno or trance, this massive store is worth seeing. They have artsy clothes, makeup, and really interesting accessories.
